PlayBook being discontinued, Media Players on the horizon
Please Login to Remove!
So I was out the other night and was speaking with a trusted source at RIM.
I mentioned how I was just testing out PB OS 2.0 and how it was a real shame that RIM was holing it back until February. I was more or less directly told that the PB is dead and RIM will be moving away from it.
This comes from someone who is well connected to top level management, so I do trust what they say.
I also mentioned to them that I was glad RIM didn't pursue media player devices as was rumoured, to which they said "yet".
So there you have it, the PB is getting canned and media payers are coming at some point.
Obviously anyone here can take it or leave it. No I can't go into any additional details.

Media players? I sure hope that trusted source of yours was joking.
Completely ridiculous.
RIM would have more success entering the microwave oven market than trying to compete with the iPod in 2012.

WOW!!! Would they really ditch their tablet?
Personally I dont believe it, specially because BBX should act like ICS on androids and run on all their devices but than, this is just what I heard from news and what I hope.

Well there was that supposed sheet that made rounds just before DevCon where there were two QNX media players listed.
The person I was talking to seemed to be truthful in what they were saying, and didn't seem to enjoy admitting it.

I don't know who your "trusted source" is , but he's obviously not in the loop, the PlayBook is not dead and there are no plans to discontinue it.

This person is definitely in the loop, probably more than 85% of the employees in the entire organization.
Obviously this is speculation from my part but I was specifically told, the PB is on its way out. That could mean a lot of things like RIM will release OS 2.0 say no new PB and possibly continue with minimal support and updates. It could mean an entirely new concept of tablet... I wasn't going to push for clarification as they shouldn't have been telling me this in the first place.

Well, people told me the Bold 9000 wasn't real when I posted it way back in the day.
I'm not expecting people to take this to heart, but it's something I've had mumbled to me and I figured I'd share.
I can't see PB becoming successful anymore. Sadly mine sits in my bag every day never to be used. I installed the OS 2.0 beta so we'll see if I find some things to play with through that.
Overall I just have a hard time finding a real and true use for a tablet, but that's just me.

Playbook sales are abismal. I wouldn't be surprised if the PB was cancelled.

I deal in reality. The reality is the Playbook is a failure. It was half baked and rushed to market. I guess they thought "flash" would carry the day. Didn't work out too well for them on that. I don't take joy or sadness in that fact, it's just simply the way it is. RIM should be concentrating on their bread and butter BB market and not worry about a market segment they don't have a prayer of even making a dent in.

Your version of "reality" has been questioned over and over again on this forum.

Not so much reality as opinions. Argon has a lot of them and feels that since he is ALWAYS right (iPhone is the best phone ever) that he can tell everyone else that they are wrong.

I was right with Flash, I'm betting I'll be right with the Playbook as well. I like Becks BTW.

It's not true if BGR hasn't reported it.
