I have had my Pearl for about two years. A few months ago, it did the exact same thing for about one week which as you know is annoying because you cannot hear an incoming calls.
Then it simply started working again and I could hear all sounds (ringer, speaker, etc.). I did not make any OS changes or software changes. I am guessing that some contact on the internal hardware must have come loose and then reconnected. It has been fine since.
I know this isn't helpful, but my guess is that it is hardware related and maybe you should go to AT&T.
