Hmm don't carriers usually have a trial period for you to test their service? Also if cell reception is bad where you are, I'd consider UMA. Works great if you have a wifi router at home already.

Well Tmobile can't quite control where you move to, so while I agree their network is worse that the other providers, they haven't done anything wrong.

it doesn't work at your house?

They'll let you out of your contract.

They always do. I have friends that moved and this happened. I had 4 lines and my house lost reception. They put all the lines out of contract.

Maybe you should try a different approach like talking to them.

Yeah Verizon recently doubled the ETF amount.



I don't know if its Tmobile getting worse. I've been with them for over 5 years and haven't had anything really major to complain about. Cell reception is always different for different people though.

T-Mobile has a 14 day remorse period wherin you can return the device and get out of your contract.

i've had t-mobile for 5 years now so the 14 days has been up for awhile.

yup.

I think pretty much any carrier these days will let you out if you happen to move and it stops working.

Just courtesy I'd figure. Same with business phone lines. You sign a contract, but normally if you go out of business and close shop, the contract is off.

Though I don't think the "hey I just moved, doesn't work at my house, I want out" approach doesn't work. Normally they will try to work with you first (offer different device, or @home, airave, etc etc) do see if that will bandaid or fix the problem before they let you out of contract.

The VZW ETF is 350 on smartphones, and while I know that applies to everyone on this forum using Big Red, it's still 175 for everyone else using a dumbphone.
The way I see it, it makes sense. Most of the time, carriers (VZW not excluded) will work with a customer in a no-service situation. Just don't sign a contract if you know you're moving into a no-service area, and if you should be getting service, there are options. The high ETF fee is for those who worked the system by buying the subsidized phones and then selling them at MSRP online. Even if you pay the 175, you still make quite a bit on the high end phones. Technically, they're supposed to charge customers who don't return the device within 6 months, but the new ETF fee goes to show just how toothless that policy is.

Cheap in the US for your cancellation fees!

Rogers is a max 400 for voice + 100 for data
Fido is a max 400 for voice + 200 for data
Telus is a max of 700 voice+200 for data
And I think bell might be 400 for voice +200 for data, but I think they have a stipulate where if you cancel within the first year it's an extra 100 on top.

You americans have it easy! And the 3 year contract is still the standard here as well.

Those are some incredible ETF rates.
But those 3-year contracts really blow me away!

Sometimes I like to browse carrier pages in other countries to see what it's like for others, it's like a whole different world. Apparently Canada is at the top or second to the top for most expensive cell phone plans and contracts.

100 for data used to be standard, I'm surprised other companies are raising it. The norm here is 20x each month left at a max of 400 except those companies that don't cap it. For the data it's either 5x each month left or 10 in the case of everyone else.

Glad I'm super happy with my company! Never had a problem, except once where they forgot to change my plan. I'm calling them later to have them adj the difference and put me on the one I wanted.

But if you lose your 799 dollar iphone that you got at 199 through a three year voice and data plan, the 500 bucks makes a bit more sense to cover the cost of the subsidy, a 200 dollar outright (no term) consumer phone I would rather buy outright than pay 400 to get out of the contract.

Wow, what's the device insurance like? I go without it, but if I'm staring at several hundred to get out of a data plan, it's a new decision.

Actually, apparently Telus is now charging 7 dollars a month to replace your iphone if you lose or break it.

I haven't had a chance to research into this and look into the terms and conditions, but it's a new thing over here.

A friend just got released a few months ago from T-mobile. He moved to this area, and could not get reception where he lived on T-mobile. They verified it from their own known coverage areas, and let him out and he jumped to Verizon.

Before I renewed the last time when living in MI, I verified through Verizon that if I moved to a location that did not offer service, they would let me out with no early termination due. As it happened, I moved to an area where VZW has great coverage, and is about the only carrier used in this area; all others have limited coverage areas.
