I'm having trouble when I'm entering or editing a contact, and go to enter the phone number field. I want to enter dashes in the phone number, but the SYM button only produces a '*' in the field instead of bringing up the symbols popup. How do you enter dashes in the phone number in these fields?

because it's in number lock. it does that for all phone number fields. a dash is not an actual sign used in a call; star, pound and numeric entries are.

why would you manually need to enter dashes? whether if to call or to text it's not required.

Yes, good point. I not only make calls from my Pearl, but I also use it as a phonebook when I am in my office. When I look up a phone number and need to dial it on my office phone, having dashes in the number makes it much easier to read and dial the number.

Sounds like you need a new office, with a phone that's dialed by your computer.

But, to answer your question... to type symbols in the number field hold down the ALT key (bottom left most, with the arrows) then press SYM at the same time.

I agree, makes the numbers much easier to read when they're separated.

Or you could do what I did and edit all the numbers in your outlook. Then delete all the numbers from your address book and re-sync it all since for some reason it doesn't sync dashes with already existing numbers. =\

I've resorted to using the period (the OP key) for a spacer when entering telephone numbers in the Pearl. It works pretty well for me.

The BB sync s/w rocks. I synced 500 contact vcards with all sorts of info with no issues at all! beats the nokia sync s/w anyday...
