What are these terms, and why there is a difference?

PS and CS = Gprs and GSM
CS Only = GSM Only

PS stands for Packet Switch data (GPRS), and CS stands for Circuit Switch data (dial up).

put simply...

cs: is circuit switched. this is equivalent to dialup data (i.e. when you dial a telephone number) and the data is conveyed in a similar manner to a voice call

cs and ps/gprs is gsm
If you select 'CS only' then you can only make a CS type connection as described above. You will not be able to make a GPRS / 3G connection, indeed I think you will find that the phone won't even connect to GPRS / 3G, it'll say 'gprs detached'.

ps: is packet switched. this is where packets of data are transmitted either by gprs or by 3g

ps/3g is umts

If you set the phone to 'PS only', then you can make a GPRS / 3G connection, but not a CS connection at the same time as the GPRS / 3G connection is active. The implication of this is that you can't receive a call (which is CS) while your GPRS / 3G connection is active.

The "CS" setting improves battery

Thanks so much for this. When my sms stopped working I googled to find out what the difference was and never found an explanation.

Great explanation--makes sense. However, I've never noticed any difference after changing these settings.
