Default Battery Cover Micro SD Holder

Please Login to Remove!

As I'm sure many others have, I am running out of space on my 1 gb micro SD card (What with 8 episodes of southpark, a whole slew of pictures and some MP3's)

I've thought about buying a 2 gb when they come down a little more in price but I'm still going to want to keep my 1GB handy, just for those long road trips or flights where I want to watch a movie, or need a new playlist.

My thing is this: I personally hate carrying around anything extra (Even my headphones and the adapter bug me)

If you look at the little foam piece on the inside of the battery door, you'll notice that it's no thicker than a Micro Sd card.

That got me to thinking that this could be a good place to store an extra card (inbetween the battery door and the battery)

Ideally RIM would have put in a set of "teeth" to hold an extra one in place, similar to those found in the case the MICRO SD card came in, but I suppose that's about as futile as hoping they would have made holes for the speaker or customizable Pearl colors

A lot of people on this site seem to be really crafty when it comes to "jimmy-rigging" their pearls.

Any idea's other than Scotch tape?

Here is a plan.

I used your Scotch Tape idea, but took it a tiny step forward.

I folded a piece of scotch tape in half, and then trimmed it a little thinner to make a 'strap'. Then I put the SD card down, and put the strap over it. Then I trimmed two small pieces of scotch tape, taped down one side of the strap, then, while holding it tight with one finger, taped down the other side as well.

This has created a tight, but usable strap for a microSD card. You can just slide it in and out, and it holds firmly enough to stay in. I took the battery cover, and whirled it around me in all directions, and the microSD card didn't move at all. Now, it will probably get looser every time you pull the card in and out, but since its just scotch tape, its held in by the force of the battery cover, and its not something you'll be pulling out ten times a day (since changing the SD card requires a reboot), I think its going to be fine. Especially for 5 minutes of work, and a few inches of scotch tape. ;)

See the attached picture below. It doesn't increase the 'bulge' of the battery cover at all, and the top of the 'strap' is still lower than the foam pad.

Not fancy, but it'll work! You could probably install another strap on the other side of the foam pad, if you wanted to hold a third card. ;)

Good idea, btw, I never noticed how much space was in there before...

peace,
sam

Wow, that is a great idea, if your smart you will find someone like Seidio to develope, market and sell a battery door that you design. Before they or any one else sees this and steals the idea from you

I'm gonna try this, replacing the middle piece of tape with a thin piece of tightly pulled elastic.

Thanks for getting the ball rolling!

Actually, you don't even need the tape! If you place one in there, loose, and put teh battery back on, it won't move at all. You can shake the Pearl all around, and when you pop the cover back off, the microSD card will be in the same spot you put it

I'm currently holding three extra microSD cards inside my battery case, and I only see two issues:

1. you have to be aware when opening it up (which you are only going to do if you need to change the card)

2. the case could pop off accidentally and you might lose the cards. If you put your phone in a case (like I do, the Piel Frama leather case), this will never be an issue.

I'd like to make a card of sorts that would let you mount microSD cards in a slot, and that would slide into the case, but if I can have a half dozen cards shoved inside the battery case, I won't need that for a while..

Update: you can keep these BEHIND THE BATTERY TOO!!!

pop out battery

load up surface with 4 or 5 cards (one over SIM card, one to it's right, three more sprinkled about)

put battery back (fits more or less flushly even with a full load 'o cards)

Got more cards? put four more on top of the battery

replace cover, and you got yerself a veritable iPod's worth of storage for your Pearl. No need to buy expensive 2gb cards when you can store ten 1-gb's at half the price of 5 2gb cards

Uhhhh I paid $50 shipped for a 2gb SanDisk from NewEgg.com

That wasn't even their cheapest one. I decided to go with a brand I had heard of.

Does anyone do a search on BBF? Does not seem like it.

This was bandied about, even recently.

My post was more about a mod to the battery door that would facilitate this, or atleast something a little more crafty than just laying it on top of the battery.

I tried the scotch tape method but replaced the thin folded strip of scotch tape (The one that holds it to the door) with a thin, tightly pulled piece of elastic. Works great

Oh, and P.S. This thread was started 4 days before that thread, so perhaps someone ELSE didn't use the search feature, though I won't mention any names :P

Actually I think SF's thread was started a while ago. I think the time stamp is off.

Doesn't matter when it started. While San Fran's thread is extremely helpful, it focuses on the ability to store when using the extended battery. I think brfilora was maybe trying to find a solution without the extended battery.
