K shortcut key does not Lock Keyboard on BB Bold 9700 - Help Please!
Please Login to Remove!
Hi All,
I've searched the net and other forums for support and cannot find a solution to this problem. Essentially, on my Blackberry Bold 9700 I lost the ability to hit the K button to lock the keyboard.
I have a BB 9700 running v5.0.0.714. I had not installed any new software at all before getting this problem. I didn't do anything differently other than launch the Kayak app. I updated the app and also removed it but still the K button does not work to lock the keyboard.
After searching the forums, I found a couple suggestions (which didn't work):
- Reset the theme - didn't work - but it did make the 'keyboard lock' icon come back to the home screen. The issue is that there is no _ under the K to make it so when I hit K it locks the screen. I even tried the default theme (it's a T-Mobile US branded 9700) and didn't work either.
- Reinstall service books - didn't work either - didn't think there is a correlation here anyway.
- Full restart, batter pull - did this multiple times - didn't work.
- Update software - all software apps and OS is up-to-date. I have fully uninstalled the kayak app just in case there was a correlation, still doesn't work.
Can anyone help please? Thanks

Use the lock button on the top of the handset.
Also, it's Vodafone, not Vodaphone.

The software was changed to no longer lock with a K. Lots and lots of threads on many different forums about it. There is no way to add the K back to lock the device. The two alternatives are:
- press the lock key on the top left edge (there is a legend there so you can see where to push)
- downgrade to an older version of 5.0 which has the old lock functionality

Thanks, that is absolutely unbelievable they removed that shortcut!! Just like when they removed the Alarm (R) shortcut!
This brings me to another problem... the upper left LOCK button doesn't really lock the phone, rather it puts it into standby. When I wake the phone up, it doesn't require a password! is there a way to customise this?
THanks

I have the BlackBerry Bold 9700, and I use ALT-ENTER to lock my phone (with the password). It took me a while to figure it out because ALT-ENTER caused the language selection menu to pop up; but you can change that. Go to "Options", then "Language and Text Input", from there select "None" for "Input Language Selection Shortcut".

Another option which I use is a shortcut program like shortcutme. I hit the space bar and letter k and my device now locks.

If you go to "Password" in your options menu and enable this feature, the "K" to lock the phone will then work. I am on the newest OS (5.0.0.862) and just tested it out. When I disabled the password, the "K" shortcut no longer worked. I hope this helps.

Thank you for the information. I will say I had different experiences than what you stated with different phones and OSs. Good suggestion.

Not working on .714 . . . Could be that it was added back in .862?

BB 9700 Hotkeys for Phone Lock and Alarm
I too, am extremely disappointed about the loss of the K and R key functions, and..... to make matters worse, the A key which had always been my Speed Dial key to phone my son ADAM, has now been taken over to do the same half function that that the lock button does on the top of the device.
If I were still within my return period, I would trade this phone in for these reasons alone.
Very very dissatisfied.

Send all comments to
If enough people complain, RIM may listen.
Seems mighty minor to return a BlackBerry; I've learned (somehow) to live without the "A" key..

Re: K shortcut key does not Lock Keyboard on BB Bold 9700 - Help Please!
hate to bring up this old thread, but this is solved by disallowing the "dial from home" setting in the phone setup. so go to Phone Options: General Settings: Dial from Home Screen to No
this brings the under bar short cuts back.
K being one of them.... hope this helps for all who stumble here like i did.

Sadly, no. Read the thread again. The K shortcut is gone -- as in does not exist -- after some point in OS upgrades. I know I don't have it on 9700/5.0.0.714.

Re: K shortcut key does not Lock Keyboard on BB Bold 9700 - Help Please!
First, I've been operating with dial from home disabled and using keyboard shortcuts for ages. That's how I know it disappeared with an upgrade. It was there when I first got the 9700, and either disappeared with the last upgrade or the one before that.
Second, did you read the thread from the top? If not, then let me point out http://www.blackberryforums.com/gene...ml#post1646273 and http://www.blackberryforums.com/gene...ml#post1646287. Now, we can add http://www.blackberryforums.com/gene...ml#post1709228.
So, as I and others said, the K shortcut is missing in some OS versions. The OP's issue has nothing to do with dial from home being enabled. And with your post, I can now believe it has been added back.
What you can say is that you jumped to a conclusion that was wrong. I won't say I haven't done the same thing, more often than I care to admit.
Welcome to the group, TheMole.
