Not sure what you are talking about apps running in the background, I did not change/add and new apps since the new update.

If you have apps (applications or programs) running in the background it can drain your battery even if you are not using them.
To see all apps running press and hold the Menu key (the key next to the green phone button) - you will see a list of icons - this is similar to a Task Manager on the PC. You should only have 5 apps running (Home, Browser, Messenger, Phone, Messages) - if you have others you can select them then use the Close or Exit option.
It's a good idea/habit to press and hold down the menu key to see which are running every now and then. For example, if you have Google Maps running (or any other app using GPS) it will drain your battery.
Another tip is to turn off bluetooth if you are not using this - you can do this by going to the home screen and tapping the top right corner to go into Manage Connections. If you leave it on and you are not using it, it keeps checking for a device to connect to and can drain your battery.
One last tip - plug your blackberry into the charger whenever you go to bed - Lithium Ion batteries run best this way.
