I'd like to buy a BB Bold, and I was wondering.. If I do NOT have a BlackBerry Data Plan, would I be able to chat in BB Messenger with only WiFi (Being inside a hot spot of course.)

Hello Starchest! I am sorry but BBM will not function without a data plan. Data Plan get's you access to RIM's servers which are the transport for this data.

You MUST have a BB data plan to use BB messenger, you can use the wifi, but you must still have a sim card in the phone that's been provisioned.

If you get a BB data plan, you can use the BB messenger over wifi

I don't have a data plan and BB mail and BB messenger don't work - nor do any downloaded applications (msn, iskoot, googl maps). Is probably best to get a data plan if it's not too late

Just another curiousity. I am currently with AT&T. Own a nokia smartphone (N95) and is currently subscribed to the unlim data and txt plan. If I were to buy a blackberry without contract, and move my sim card to the BB, would BBM and BB App store work or does it strictly need to be on a "BB data plan" in order for the "BB" apps to function? Any help is much appreciated!

You need a BlackBerry data plan. A generic data plan will not work.

It seems that my bbm works over wifi. I have a data plan, but then I turned off the network connection and just left the wifi turned on. Do I still get charged data using bbm over wifi. Dumb question, but I'm leaving the country and planning on using my bbm over wifi to save money.
Does anybody know? Thnaks.

I don't believe you will be charged for using BBM over wifi while abroad.
