You are correct that the platform version for 4.5.0.163 is lower than 4.5.0.153. I'm not sure why this is but it must have something to do with that specific build. The platform version for 4.5.0.158 is also higher than 4.5.0.163 and 4.5.0.153.
I'm guessing that 4.5.0.163 is a specific build that was built for O2 UK. Much like the strange version of 4.6.0.167 that was built for At&t.

Decided to load it into my PC at work to do a software upgrade.
Guess what?
No upgrade notice at all. Seems like apploader is looking at the software platform version - which 4.5.0.153 is higher than 4.5.0.163.
Unless there is something significantly newer for performance/memory/making pizza on the new version, I'd stick to the slightly older 4.5.0.153
