Default 8100 Micro SD max memory size?

Please Login to Remove!

Just curious what the max memory size for the 8100 is? I have a 1GB transflash card from my V3i that I would want to use in the 8100. If I wanted to upgrade to a 2GB card later on is the 8100 capable of that or no?

Speaking from smartphone experience, 2gb shouldn't be a problem. The format (filesystem) would be the same on the 1gb and the 2gb so the pearl should be able to handle it.

I just bought a 2GB card. Im excited to use it, between MP3's, Video Clips, Pictures, and Apps I hope 2GB is enough...it'll hafto do until they make a higher capacity card though.

6 Days till release.

I believe you can use a 2 GB card on the phone. That's the max you can get for a memory card for now. Of course there are higher ones coming out soon.

Why post only a link, when you can also post the actual info...

Problem
You receive the following error when using a SanDisk 2 GB microSDxxx8482; memory card with a BlackBerry Pearl 8100 smartphone:

SDCard block length is unsupported.

The BlackBerry Pearl 8100 smartphone supports memory cards with up to 1GB storage capacity.

I feel posting the link is far better. Perhaps it will educate some users to seach not only on blackberryforums.com but also use the BlackBerry Public Technical Knowledge Center. There is lots of info there as you can see and it is far under-used!!

As a maker of hardware and its matching software, I can tell you that the HW is changing SO fast it is hard to keep up with everything.. SO, testing criteria have to be established and tests completed using them. THEN you can go do more tests.. (and have something else change on you!)..

So the 2G will probably work just fine, but currently is not 'supported', ie, they won't commit to fix anything if it doesn't work. Then they'll get to test with some number of 2G chips.. (can't test with ALL of them, too many). and then they will do whatever they decide to do (release sw fix, say it doesn't work right enough so its not supported, or whatever)..

and then the cycle repeats..

getting from concept, to first prototype, to first manual builds, to certification level (automated process works, woo woo) , to manufacturing volumes level is a LOT of work.. supplier feeds, etc all linking up to the big event.. think about the volumes that had to be produced pre-announce to get 10-50 in each outlet on announce day(a million?)... so product content was frozen months (8 weeks is 2 months) ago..

above 2 gig is harder still, as the default file system structure can only handle 2 gig volumes..

Thanks for all the information you've all posted here. I hope they fix the 2GB issue with a software update or something but if not looks like I'll just have to rock a 1GB card.

sdetweil,,,

Do you think this is a problem RIM will be able to solve with software updates? Or is it a problem built into the hardware?

Everyones missing the point here, when he said 3 years in the making, he meant the conceptual design, the software wasnt made until very recently so everyones points are not valid about not having 2GB support its not like they had this made 3 years ago and locked it in a vault. Get real

For something as complex as this BlackBerry, I bet the group of designer assigned to handle this project were sleeping thinking of how the module design is going to work with the rest of features ++ plus putting it inside a thinner version of a BlackBerry? Counting the dreams and the daydreams and the nightmares of waking up still thinking about how to design the module, the case and everything else... would amount to more that 3 Business years.

When I was working as a case design engineer, I eat and sleep (plus dream) with my design. And it wasn't even THAT complex! But at that time, 14 years ago, doing CAD/CAM was a nightmare. Heck, carpal tunnel wasn't even identified yet! So given the technology nowadays, 3 years is about perfect time.

As for those who whined about the 2GB for music and photo or video purposes? Get an iPod and an ordinary phone.
