Question BES 4.1.5 upgrade question (from 4.0.6)!!!

Please Login to Remove!

Just a little paranoid about my planned upgrade and wanted to get feedback. I have a 4.0.6 server who's DB is on a sql 2005 server. I also have a 4.1.5 BES server pointed to no DB. I plan on doing the following.

1. Upgrade ONLY 4.0.6 DB (sql 2005) by running the setup from my 4.0.6 server.
I will not upgrade the BES 4.0.6 server itself just the db & I will not move any users to the 4.1.5 (just yet)
2. I will then verify the 4.0.6 server still functions
3. then I will point my 4.1.5 server to this just upraded DB.

I think this should work just fine. Will my BB users get a new service book/IT policy if I just upgrade the DB without moving them to the 4.1.5 server?

Just a little paranoid since most BB users are all VIP's...

thanks for your feedback...

Wirelessly posted (Breaking Ball)

Go to blackberry.com and do a search for Knife-Edge cutover.

It's fairly simple and will explain in great detail what you need to do.

Not sure why you'd doing the upgrade this way.

Are you looking to go to new hardware?

Why no upgrade to 4.1 SP5 in place; get a steady state and then do a phase 2 of the upgrade to new hardware?

You could do it the way you described (oddly enough I think this is how RIM does their ugprades where they upgrade the DB separately and then do server upgrades) ... I just think its a process less people follow.

We are looking to go to new hardware. But the problem is that the new 4.1.5 hardware is in a new Datacenter in Ohio. Our current 4.0.6 hardware is in DFW, TX with our Exchange 2003 system.

Sometime in the next 4 months we will migrate the Exchange 2003 system to Ohio. During that time I would like to gradually move 4.0.6 users to the 4.1.5 server. But I will need to have (if my db ugrade thoughts are valid) my 4.1.5 server pointed to the same DB "domain".

I would to a knife-cutover but asper best practice (i believe) BES & Exchange should reside close together. Forgot to mention this important factor.
