I have recently installed the desktop manager and I consistently get the BSOD if I don't shut down the desktop manager before putting the laptop into sleep mode.

I scanned other posts but didn't see anything recent for this.

Is this a known problem with a fix?

I don't know if there's a fix, but I've run into the same problem on a few computers when using 5.0.1.49. Our solution is to uninstall and install .30. This solves the problem every time, so maybe this version will work for you as well. Never have any problems with it.

It could be a minor compatibility issue that gets leveraged due to another existing problem, like a root kit on the XP laptop. My Windows-using buddies in the tech field have been discussing how these hidden root kits have been wreaking havoc in conjunction with other issues.

Definitely try KOR's suggestion first, as simplest is best. If problems persist, I believe MS has a download to hunt for these heinous root kits.

Not sure what the issue is, but I don't think it's related to malicious software for us. I'm typically running into the issue on brand new Dells straight out of the box. I'm no expert by any stretch of the imagination, but I would guess that it's related to software config on the machines. Our hardware guy can't diagnose the problem and since we can fall back on the previous version, we haven't spent a lot of time looking at it. It's a big pain for us but not that big...
