I've been a berry 7000 series user for a long time and I'm used to ending a call by the side button. I guess it's just training to not use the side button to end the call? After doing this countless times for several years, it's hard to teach an old dog new tricks. Has anyone else gone through this?

We all have. You get used to hitting the red button to end a call...

Yeh tell me about it. Without thinking today, I hit the side button and 5 mins later still saw I was connected!!! That's because I didn't return it to the cradle holder!
Still a bad design, they should make the button an option.

It is hard to overcome years of muscle memory. I agree.

What I do on the 8700 is either click the thumbwheel in and choose the selection to end the call, or use the dedicated red button, like someone else suggested.

I can only speculate (based on complaints from some of my users) that people were accidentally hitting the ESC button while in the middle of a call, so RIM and / or the carriers changed this. Most of my "power users" (you and i included) lament the passing of using the ESC button to end the call. But the world moves on.
