Capita_7, where did you "hear" that? If that could be confirmed, it would be really good information.

Thanks! This is the only piece of info (though not confirmed) I've heard about this so far.

I'm surprised that there's no official words from BB about 8320's card read/write speed or recommended card type/class. In photography field such info is discussed and tested to death.

Hope someone with access to Class 2, 4, & 6 cards can do everyone a favor and test whether there's difference in media access speed (through USB and internal read/write). Then the answer should be clear.

Ok, instead of waiting for an answer, maybe we can take it into our own hands...

I did a test of file transfer speed between BB and desktop, with a 176.55MB mpeg file, here is what I got:

BB to desktop (card read): 3'13"86 => 176.55 / 193.86 = 0.911 MB/sec

Desktop to BB (card write): 3'12"66 => 716.55 / 192.66 = 0.916 MB/sec

These speeds are quite slow.

Hopefully people with all classes of cards (2/4/6) can do similar tests using files of similar sizes and types (50MB or more should be fine), then we likely can get a good idea of how card class affects transfer speed in our BB's.

If specs become available for the 8320, i wonder if they would differ for the 8330 since "technically" the 8330 is a newer model although they are almost 100% the same.

The goal is to have at least a rough idea of difference of file transfer speed with cards of different classes. So if one has class 4 card and does a similar test, we would at least know if it brings benefits against my class 2 card. The speed I got is so slow, I fully expect the BB-card interface or the card itself to be the bottleneck. There shouldn't be too many factors to worry about.

But anyway, it's close to the deadline for returning my Class 2 cards. I likely have no choice but stick with what I have now. So any upcoming answers are likely only educational for me (doubt I'll buy another card for our BB's).

I have a Class 6 card in my 8830; Transferring files to th edevice is pretty quick. I've noticed though that browsing pictures on the device is extremely slow with this card. I have an old Class 2 card (both cards are Sandisk) and picture browsing seems exactly the same on the device, but transfer from PC to the device is much slower.

Could you time a transfer and let me know of the file size and the time it takes?

I found the same things- that BB reads data (esp. pictures) from card slower than PC-BB file transfer with my Class 2 card. This is likely limited by the CPU processing speed.

Go to kingston dot com slash flash slash villiage and you can select the BB to figure out what is compatable for your BB

However, that being said anyone who upgraded to the newest 4.5 OS is now able to have up to 32GB card

Thanks.

Think it didn't work when I tried the word "flash" because "villiage" should be "village".

Now it works and class 4 4GB card is listed as the one for 8320. So looks like the rumor of class 4 speed is correct:

Too bad I've passed return. Both my wife and I will be stuck with our 4GB class 2 cards until we can't bear it any longer.

Just found this thread........sorry.

I had a 2gb, class 2 and just recently purchased an 8gb, class4. I have no scientific data to provide other than the fact that I have quite a few images (including photos taken at the highest res. setting) on my card and when I go into the Media app>Pictures with my class 4 card there is a noticeable bump in the time it takes to load the thumbnail images compared to when I was using the class 2. Same thing when I go into the Music portion of the Media app. When I go to play a song it loads much faster than it did with class 2.

This is all on an 8330 running one of the beta OS's.
