Default BlackBerry Server Upgrade (for Domino) - 2.26 to 4.0.1

Please Login to Remove!

Trying to upgrade to BES 4.0sp1 for Domino and I'm getting the following error: "Incompatible version detected on the system. Blackberry Enterprise Server upgrade will now terminate". Do I need to install 4.0.0 (no SP) first and then install the service packs? If so, where can I download 4.0.0? Only 4.0sp1-3 are available on the site (blackberry.com).

Thanks!

Default BES upgrade from 2.1 to 4.0

We are in the process of upgrading from 2.1 to 4.0 and are running into an issue where we can not use the import functionality of 4.0 to get the "historical" data off the old box. The import lets us select the user to transfer, and shows completion, but there is nothing that appears in between these steps. As a result, our users can not reply to messages that they have on their devices, nor can they reconsile their device to remove ones that they have taken off their email client (Lotus Notes).

Anyone have any ideas?

The recommended upgrade path for Domino is 2.1.x -> 2.2.3 at least and then to 4.0. Also you cannot rollback a v4.0 upgrade to 2.2. There are lot of changes made to BlackBerryProfiles.nsf and the BBDir.nsf databases (BBDir is no longer used in a 4.0 environment).
If you've not done that, then you're in for a very long weekend. The word "replicas" comes to mind if this is the case.

Ok... pardon the mess-up. We are actually running version 2.2.6.12, not 2.1 as I noted above. Does that help with anything?

Well that's better.....now for the problem. If you have any devices running the 4.0 code, then I'll suggest you try an Enterprise Activation (EA). You'll have to set an Activation password for those users first, then try to activate.

For those devices at the 3.x code, try removing and re-adding the user (try one user first). This process will create a new statedb for the user, and yes...previous messages will be orphaned. Also have a look at the MAGT, SYNC and ROUT logs (text files) on the BES to see what's the level of activity and status of the users. Hope this helps.

Will the EA keep the previous messages and allow users to continue to reply to them? I had heard that they would not be able to. (I will not be able to test this until Monday since I have already unsuccessfully upgraded mine).

I was able to convert the users using EA, but the old messages still can not be replied to from the HH. These are 4.0 users. Any other ideas?

You could remove the users and re-add them, and during that stage choose the maximum amount of messages to prepopulate the device. That sholud allow them to reply to previous messages. Remember to get rid of any "old" state databses for the users. Try a test with one user first. You may have to wipe the devices.

How do I remove old databases and set the maximum amount of messages (sorry if this is a no-brainer, kinda new at this).

For message prepopulation settings..go to the BM console.
Select the Server in left panel.
Choose the Server Configuration" tab
Select "Edit Properties" in the right pane
In the resulting poperties window, Select the "Messaging" option on the left.
The messaging options in the right (last two items) are set for :
Prepopulation By Message Age 5 - that can be changed to 7 (days are implied here)
Prepopulation By Message Count 200 - that can be changed to 350. These are "Global settings" for the BES server
For the old state databases - use the Admin client (domino administrator) to seek out the user/state database. Have a look at the profiles database for identifying the users. There are other places to check as well.
