actually, i am in South Korea for the next year and although i cannot roam here (my Pearl is GSM, only CDMA here) i would like to use my BB as a mobile dictionary/ Korean phrase book... i have seen a few pay dictionaries but would like to have a look at some free alternatives first

I have not seen anything like that ... at least not for free. Hopefully somebody else can help you.

Application for IM, Text, and International Calling.

Free or cheap international mobile calls, texts and IM - EQO

very cheap rates for international calls. uses mobile VoIP with great sound quality. Trial version gives you about 100 minutes, then just buy your airtime. even better if you can get the person you are calling to get the app, you can talk to other EQO members free (it will use airtime, but to call anywhere in the world and use only ur anytime minutes aint bad)

even if you never call out of the country, it will also do Instant Messaging with AOL, MSN, Yahoo!, Google Talk, ICQ, and Jabber all free.

ive tried the application and am very pleased, about 20% of my calls are to Europe and have had no problems.

USEFUL APPLICATIONS FOR BLACKBERRY PEARL - in no particular order:

1. Opera Mini 4 - Final - Super fast web browser on your blackberry. Careful though as it might pump up your bill. FREE

2. Metro 1.2 (Underground) Map Viewer - Underground maps for major cities: London, Paris, New York, Madrid. FREE

3. AutoLock No more calls by accident whilst your Blackberry is in your pocket. FREE

4. SoftReset - Reset the BlackBerry Pearl without having to take the battery out. FREE

5. Beyond411 Beyond411 provides instant access to Yahoo Local Yellow pages, maps, and driving directions. FREE

6. BB Screen Shooter Nice tool to capture the current screen of your Pearl. Useful to create documentation, etc. FREE

7. Color Pearl - Now FREE and very nice.

8. Phantom Theme - OTA, quite serious and functional, downloadable only from BBerry online - home page. FREE

09. JiveTalk 1.0.3 - multi-client instant messaging application that supports simultaneous connections to AIM, MSN, Yahoo!, GoogleTalk, ICQ and Jabber. Not free but fully worth it.
10. Blinkberr - BlinkBerry blinks the external LED backlight in different colors according to the signal strength returned from the phone.
11. E-File Desktop Manager - Users can create folders, rename files and move them between directories in a one-step synchronization process.
12. Piconews - Piconews gives you a permanent connection to news articles in real time.
13. LexSpell spelling checker v. 2.0 - A BlackBerry spell checker the way it should be - quick, quality and free
14. Dictionaries, spell checkers, Bible study, phrase books, etc - Several languages, not free but do their intended job very well.
15. VR+: Voice Recorder for BlackBerry - 2.2.0 update Can record voice messages for free and e-mail them to their contacts to be played back in mp3.

----------------------------------------

Please feel free to add your suggestions to the list and I will keep this top of the page constantly updated.

#8 is just a link to a picture...is there an actual URL for the OTA install?

you can get the Phantom theme right off the blackberry site on your mobile browser. at least, you could a couple months ago.

I personally don't like it. I tried using right after I bought my phone before I put any extras on it and it slooooooowed it way down.

My fave application at the moment is:

nuTsie.com! Listen and Share your iTunes Music, Playlists, Songs, MP3s and CDs - nuTsie

If you have T-Mobile or AT&T it is awesome. syncs with your iTunes library and lets you listen to your music wirelessly. I have about 4000 songs in my library so this is a GREAT feature for the Pearl, especially since I can't bring myself to dish out the money to buy a microSD card larger than 512mb

BlinkBerry doesn't work for Sprint's 8130. Just downloaded, installed, and tried to start and configure it and it told me it does not support anything except the 8100 Pearl. Bummer. I wanted my Pearl to be cute.

2GB MicroSD = $30CAN... are you a student on an extremely tight budget?
