Hello all,
I'm new to Blackberry and smartphones in general. I have a few questions, please excuse my ignorance.

1/ I have wi-fi at home and work, how can I stop my phone receiving emails automatically? I know I can switch data services off but I want to be able to receive BBM's

2/ When at home it shows Vodafone UK and my home wireless at the top of the screen, how can I be sure that I am using wi-fi and not my data allowance?

1. You can't.
2. If your WiFi network is showing at the top, then the applications that can use WiFi will use that by default.

1 - No easy way. You can delete the email address from the device, or go into BIS and change the setting to not forward email to the device. Fact is, the BlackBerry is intended for email any time any where, so what you are asking for isn't something that would naturally be planned for.

2 - The BlackBerry will default to wifi when it is connected and the throughput is sufficient. That is not to say it won't use the mobile network sometimes -- from what people post, it will -- but it will use wifi mostly. The only way to prevent using the mobile network is to turn it off and only have on wifi.

Thanks I thought maybe there was a push setting that could be turned off.

What about bbm? Will that use wi-fi if availble?

BBM will use wifi.

There are some things (app world comes to mind) that need the mobile network to check for some location identifier or something, so in those cases you will need to be connected to the mobile network when you use those. But BBM isn't one.

If it's the sound of a new email that your trying to avoid, go to the sound profiles and do an edit to silence email and save as a new profile name. The using the side key for speed, select the alternate profile.

BBM is usually seperate from email and standard text messages.

It was more to restrict data usage as I only have 500mb. I might remove the email account and log on using the browser when in a wi-fi zone.

Then your only option is to log into the BIS server and stop the email from being sent.

Note that emails themselves do not use much data as long as you don't download pictures or large attachments.

I have found a way but.......
OK what I have found is that if you go into email account management, in there goo into the filters section, scroll down and you will see an option saying ""When no filters apply:", you have 2 choices, "Forward messages to the device" or "Do not forward messages to the device". There is only one small snag, if you don't forward messages to the device, when you later on select the option to forward message you only get messages that reach the server after you selected the option, ie. you don't download any messages there were sent to the server in between switching delivery off and back on.
It would be nice to be able to do that.

Nope. That's the way it works. If you select that filter, the messages you receive while that it active will never be sent to the device.

And it seems that it would be a pain to do this each and every time and then have to change it back each time.

Note that airharkness mentioned the "do not forward" in his first reply.

Ahh, I was a super newbie then and had only had the phone for a few hours, I didn't know what he meant by "Go into BIS" DOH
