I am by no means an AT&T expert, but I have dealt with the provider before, and I know that I had similar problems with users switch between an older BB 8700g and the AT&T BB 8310.
At that time the biggest problem was that AT&T needed to adjust the setting on their side noting that the phone had changed...not sure if that makes any difference...but I has helped me with issues on AT&T's EDGE network before.
Basically what I am saying is:
IF: you switched your phone from an older BlackBerry
THEN: you may need to make sure that AT&T has your correct info for your new phone in the system
