Default Cingular 8525

Please Login to Remove!

Well, I hated to do it, but had to try...so I went and picked up Cingular's new 8525 (HTC Hermes) this morning. I have to say it's a slick little device and my first experience with PocketPC Phone Edition. I love my 8700c, but really wanted to be able to access my Slingbox, and use a few of the other media capabilities. (Getting dl speeds of around 800k in the Atlanta area) Anyway... I went ahead and installed BBConnect. It assigned me a PIN, and shows that the network is available, but under IP it's still saying "No Connection" and I don't have any service books listed yet. Anyone run through this config before on Windows Mobile?
Thanks
Will

You most definitely can, the problem is WM5 Smartphone edition only. Not pocketpc.

Actually, the version I have is provided by Vodafone for PPC. I have a friend running it on his Hermes on T-Mobile. I'm wondering if its a connection issue with Cingular. I haven't had a lot of time to mess with it.

The PocketPC edition is the more robust/feature packed edition. (Probably more bugs too.) The HTC Hermes, Treo 750, etc. run that version. These are the touchscreen units. The Smartphone edtion seems to be a little faster and more streamlined. Seem to be better for "business phones." They can be used one handed a little more easily. The Samsung Blackjack, and Motorola Q are Smartphones. Both versions can use BBConnect, Good, and MS Direct Push. Both can open some MS Office docs, but only PPCs can edit any of them. I could go on, but I've rambled enough.... lol

There was an issue with Blackberry today. People were not able to generate new accounts or send service books to the device via RIM. Kepp trying b/c this should work for you.

The 8125 is capable of using blackberry connect, I figure you should be able to with the 8525. Call ANS (data group) to assist you with that.

Apparently that was it. I changed PINs this morning, and re-registered and everything works perfectly! Now if I could just get used to the lack of automatic caps/punctuation and the myriad of other little thoughtful items that I'm already missing from Blackberry OS.

You make me want to change but you are already in the early stages of going back to your BB. I have done it so many times and hated myself after each change. Waiting on the 8800 after the first, the Cingular 8100 has no interests to me.

i agree with i have so many phones and to be honest none of them do the job like the blackberry to be honest. to name some off got the treo650, nokia 9500, 9300, E61 and 8700c. no matter how much i play around with the other phones i am always back to my blackberry with in a few hours, dont get me wrong all the phones are great but when u have one phone that does all the things you need to do and it does it perfect its really hard to play around with anything else. oh and one last thing i had the 8125 for one day and the next day i returned it and got my 8700c which i have had for 8 month

I know I'll eventually go back to Blackberry, just not sure when. We run both BES and DirectPush on our network, and on a Windows Device the timing/reliabilty of the two services is similar. Neither is as dependable as a true Blackberry system, and DirectPush's constant polling is a huge battery hog. My struggle is with a few other features.. I'm lugging my laptop around less and less. Remote Administration over HSDPA is actually pretty good. I had been using Remote Desktop for Mobiles on my 8700c, which isn't bad at all, but I was still lowering display resolution, color depth, etc. to keep the refresh rate up. Aside from the occasional hassles of having to zoom and scroll every now and then, I can basically do anything from the 8525 that I can do from my notebook without much extra effort. The other biggie for me is media. My Slingbox works great for me on the 8525.
If I could get true streaming video, and the 3G speeds on my BB, I'd be back in a heartbeat. It just seems like Blackberry puts so much more thought into useability than Microsoft. You wouldn't believe how often I get repeating letters while typing, all because I held down a key waiting it to capitalize. I continually hit "space" while typing an e-mail or URL expecting it to use the correct punctuation. Stability is another factor. I tend to load my devices down with junk that I'm experimenting with. Even so, my 8700 rarely crashes. In 3 days, I've already rebooted my 8525 at least 3 times.
Anyway, sorry this got long. Bottom line is I'll probably end up doing something Ive been trying to avoid since the beginning...carry 2 devices. Any idea what's coming after the 8800?

I don't think Cingular officially offers it yet, but I downloaded a copy from Vodafone. It works pretty well. Only thing that's irritating is the delay in reconnecting after ActiveSync runs.

I downloaded the same file and everything installed correctly, except that under ip there was no address. Cingular added the Connect plan but still no address. Any ideas?

Try this: (Be sure you've changed your PIN/IMEI in BIS settings, or given them to your admin if you're on BES)

1. Disconnect your data connection.
2. Open BBConnect
3. On the second tab, click "Restart Service"
4. Give it a few seconds. Your device should dial the ISP connection and the status should change to "Network Available" From this point mine normally takes 15-20 seconds to change to "Connected" At this point you should be able to see an IP Address on the status page.
5. Once it's connected, hit "Register Device"

My messages normally start coming in before I can get back to the home screen.

The data connection can be turned on or off in the Comm Manager.
