Default Using T-Mobile UMA over Sprint EVDO :)

Please Login to Remove!

A little something for a chuckle -- I've been testing Sprint's EVDO datacard setup this past week, and got a Kyrocera KR1 router for it (basically it's like a normal Linksys/D-Link except it uses the 3G EVDO pcmcia card for WWAN instead of a DSL/Cable line).

I set up a basic WEP wifi on the KR1 and it worked fine with the laptop, good speeds. I then turned on UMA and connected to the wifi (and opened the ports on the KR1), then made a call to a friend just to see what would happen.

It wasn't that great and dropped right away (and I couldn't get UMA back again for some reason) but it gave me a smile thinking of what the Sprint/T-Mobile/RIM network techs would think when they looked at their logfiles... heh.

That gets me to thinking and Clearwire is supposed to have a portable roter/modem in the works for their service. If this comes out one could essentially get this device and carry with them for unlimited phone throughout their data network (which is piggy backing with Verizon and Sprints coverage map and usng their towers) with one's own portable HotSpot and when paired with T-Mo H@H would essentially be unlimited phone. Hmm need to talk to the ClearWire reps.

Just read today that Sprint and Clearwire called it quits on WiMAX, who knows what's going to happen now. I was kinda looking forward to that and just bypassing this over promise under deliver 3G stuff we're using right now. I just returned my Sprint gear today, the trial run told me it's just not up to basic DSL quality yet - too many intermittent death pauses while you're trying to do stuff.

I tried UMA over my EVDO card using my laptop and actually I was able to maintain a call just fine as long as I didn't do ANYTHING on the internet connection while on the phone call.
