Default Security Questions at every file access

Hy there.

I've created bbTracker, a GPS application for smartphones (not just BlackBerry) and it's all working well.

For some time now, I've had reports of the BlackBerry OS asking for permission for every single access of the internal memory or the SD Card (using FileConnection API). Usually activating the Firewall in the BB settings will fix this (don't ask me why ...).

Lately I've had some reports where even that doesn't work anymore and they are just asked again and again ("don't ask me again" doesn't seem to be an option in this cases).

Unfortunately I can't reproduce the problem myself (I'm using a 8800 with 4.2 OS) so I'm asking if anyone has heard about such a problem or if anyone is aware of some changes in the BlackBerry OS.

I've had those reports only from 8310 users (as far as I know), so it might have to do with a different or more up-to-date OS.

Any suggestions?

I installed bbTracker on my Curve (8320) with OS 4.2 and it worked without problems. Then I installed an OS 4.5 beta and afterwards was asked: "Do you want to grant trusted application status to this application" (or something similar). I choose no just to see what happened, and now every time bbTracker accesses internal memory or the storage card I get told: "This application bbTracker has attempted to open local content. Would you like to allow this?". There is no "don't ask me again" option.

I haven't tried it with OS 4.3, but it may well be a problem with the newer OS's.

Hope this helps.

Cheers,
IRL

(Oops, I meant I have a Curve 8310...)

I just re-installed bbTracker and this time said yes when it asked about the trusted application status. But it makes no difference, I still get asked every time about allowing local content access.

I would suggest testing it with OS 4.3, and if there is no problem there then I wouldn't worry about it until 4.5 is out of beta.

Cheers,

Hm ... interresting, thanks for testing.

I'll try to get a copy of the 4.3 OS to test it with.

I've been looking around and unless I'm mistaken, OS 4.3 was never released for the Curve and has been renamed OS 4.5. So there may be no testing required...

I just tested bbTracker with the Pearl 8130 Simulator that comes with JDE 4.3. When I turn on the simulator option "security" it exhibits the same problem. Turning on the firewall gave me the "don't ask again" option. So I guess it's an OS 4.3 and later problem after all.

You should be able to test this yourself if you download the JDE 4.3 (if you can't get a real Pearl with OS 4.3).

Cheers and good luck,

Thanks again for the insight. I've been hoping that I can get around having to download & use the Windows-only JDE (as I usually develop on Linux), but it seems in this case it will be the best solution ...

Has this ever been fixed. I was fine on a Curve with OS 4.5 (Beta). Now I am on a Bold and I have the problem.

uhhh...I wish that were true. 4.3.0.xxx (about 10 different versions) are out in the wild on 81xx and 83xx phones.

You need to get a set of RIM keys and sign the application.

Actually I don't think you can sign it, because it's a pure J2ME midlet, not a BlackBerry application. The work around is to enable the Firewall on your device:

Options -> Security -> Firewall

Then it will (should) remember your choice and not ask again.

Thanks for reply,

First i am using Blackberry RIM APIs not j2me midlets. And when i tried to sign my application, it shows "no need for signing", I think, i am not using any API , which needs signing.

Second option is Firewall setting,

Work around:
If I want to use offline mode, i have to turn firewall enabled:
1. Turn on the firewall (Options > Security > Firewall > Enabled)

For online mode, turn firewall disabled:
1. Turn off the firewall (Options > Security > Firewall > Disabled)
2. When I run my application, there will be only one pop-up asking for permission to connect, allow it.

But I think, this is not a permanent solution, if my application is using online and offline mode again and again.

So plz help me to get permanent solution of this problem.

Default The application has attempted to open a connection to a location inside the firewall

Hi All,

Can anybody tell me the solution of this problem.

I am getting this "The application has attempted to open a connection to a location inside the firewall, this is restricted due to IT Policy" prompt message.
When firewall is Enabled in my device and my application is requesting for HTTP or trying to connect with server.
I am using BB device 8310 OS version 4.5.0
