The simulator always uses MDS (via the MDS simulator) to connect to the net. This is the equivalent (for the purposes of the connection) of going through a BES connection to the machine running the MDS simulator (probably your development machine).

deviceside=false tells the blackberry to establish the connection via an MDS server, either BIS or BES depending on cofiguration IT policy etc. Deviceside=true tells the blackberry to establish a connection directly. For this it needs the APN, and uses the carrier (rather than BIS or BES) to connect to the internet. So the APN must be appropriate to your carrier and the device must be enabled by the carrier for that APN. For example Rogers allows all subscribers to use APN internet.com, but you can pay for access to APN vpn.com if you need/want some additional features offered by that APN that are useful for virtual private networks.

So, first confirm that blackberry.net is an APN that you are authorized to use on your carrier, make sure you don't need to specify a username/password pair, then use deviceside=true.
