Any other chess options out there?

I agree with your observation, and I note that it applies to some other Magmic software, such as their Solitaire games. For chess to be played on a small screen without ruining the eyes, the board should be simple and clean, not "pretty". The Medieval Chess game offers the user a choice of styles of pieces and board, but all are "busy" and, in a short time, tiring to look at.
At the moment, my best option has been correspondence chess with real people at the
http://gameknot.com site, using the Opera Mini browser. It works fine. Using the BB browser, the board can be displayed okay, but you can't actually make moves, for some reason. I'm not really fond of playing chess against machines anyway, so for me the gameknot option is better.
