The best I could get over USB is 1411kbps d/l, 213kbps u/l.
Bluetooth is 986kbps d/l, 324kbps u/l.
Had to uninstall BB Desktop Manager 4.6 and downgrade to 4.2. Weird.

I take it none of you guys are actually paying for the tethering plan.

Have you guys used Speedtest.net to optimize a PC with good results? Is it worth the $30?

There's an actually tethering plan? I don't understand... I read the FAQ and does it say you can tether all you want? At least with any data plan? Without going over your limit of course. Am I not correct on this issue?

if the bold is using the 3G network, then yes. if it is on edge, then it will not simultaneously download data and voice

Here's mine. 3G on AT&T Network with 4.6.167 OS, which is the latest from AT&T.
I tested in a week period and it seems consistent.
Looks like there is a minimal difference between the two.
More convenient with Bluetooth, so I'm staying with Bluetooth.

3g Tethering
Hello Everyone! I think this is my very first post. Been reading these forums for quite some time and now that I am tester for my company I have a few questions/concerns about the new Blackberry Bold.
The main reason my company is excited about the Bold is for the 3G tethering capabilities. We issue a lot of wireless AIRcards and we are looking to eradicate those and have the BOLD do it all!
So on with the question/concern/finding:
Yesterday I worked from my apartment where I get full 3G connection all the time, I have never seen EDGE(AT&T) with the new bold. So I figured my apartment would be a great test bed for 3G tether testing.
So I get the AT&T communication manager downloaded and installed and I get the bold connected to my computer and everything is working great I get on the internet and navigate at DSL speeds, unfortunately I didn't get a speedtest.com report. So about 30 minutes to an hour later I notice the navigating is getting really slow, almost like I am on dialup. I look over at the screen of my Bold and I notice it has EDGE!! I have never seen the BOLD with a connection of EDGE in my apartment!
Because I am geek and now spoiled with huge pipes of internet, I can't even fathom working on dialup speeds. So, I break the connection between my laptop and the BOLD and I take the battery out of the BOLD and put it back in to restart the phone. It comes back up 3G again!
I re-tether and the same situation happens again, about 30-60 minutes I get EDGE again. So this time I try to wait it out and see if 3G will ever come back while it is connected. I determined after an hour of working on a EDGE connection that 3G isn’t coming back. So I restart the BB again and 3G comes back and stays strong the rest of the day.
Has anyone else noticed this? Does anyone know of something I can try? If this is how it is across the board I will not be recommending our company invests in the BOLD, there will be no cost justification.
Oh to answer a question from before, if you have a 3G signal you can tether and make calls at the same time. Also the BOLD if connected via USB will continue charging while tethering.

How are you setting the maximum speed of the modem to 921600? The highest setting I have available is 115200.

How to connect to the internet via bluetooth?

This was done via USB... not too bad. It was done at around 1am, so the wireless traffic usage in the area was low.
When I used Bluetooth to do it (2.0 w/EDR), I ended up getting about 1.5Mbps-ish. The bluetooth transfer rate was the bottle neck at this point. But I think during peak business hours, it wouldn't make much of a difference, as I would get around 1.3-1.5Mbps anyway.
Overall, quite happy with the results.
On a comparitive note, my colleague uses an Option 3.6GT Wireless Air card on his laptop. In our bunker office, the Bold is able to cling onto the 3G signal much better (albeit me leaving it on 3G only mode, but so has he on his air card), and the transfer rates are superior too. This was compared side by side, in the same office.

Please share the procedure to connect my laptop to the internet using the Bold (internet sharing) via bluetooth. Thank you so much.

Recommended Bluetooth USB adapters
What do you people recommend for a USB adapter for blue tooth connection to your blackberry? I bought an Iogear and it will not work. Thanks.

You have to use a BT adapter that is compatible with the default Windows BT drivers. It will not work with 3rd party drivers.

Yes, thanks for the reply. Out of those adapters what do you recommend? What are people using with their new Bolds?

My laptop has a built-in BT adapter, so I'm not sure what external adapter will work.

Ah ok, thanks anyway, I'll look for one of those listed with Windows. Why RIM won't support other BT drivers confuses me.

tethering without the plan for ATT in the US

Sorry but I am confused.
With the Curve, i recall that you had to have the "ATT tethered plan" to use it in this mode.
With the Bold can one use it through a USB connection when 3G is available without the tethered plan? I think the 64.99 ulimited world plan is "without tethering"?
