Default Will My Pearl work in Japan?

Please Login to Remove!

I'm sure this question has been asked before. I have a Pearl on the Canadian Rogers network. Going to Japan for work in a few weeks. I am just wondering if I will be able to still access my emails and PIN's while in Japan? I'm not too familiar with the different band frequencies out there. GSM, GPRS and EDGE? Can anyone help explain and let me know if this works in Japan? I'm not interested in making phone calls, just accessing my email through my Pearl.

Also, another question. The BB charger that comes with the Pearl has different outlet adaptors. Does anyone know if the charger itself is a voltage converter too? Or do I need to go out and purchase one?

Thanks in advance if anyone can help me out!

F.

It may work in major airports like Narita, but Japan has it's own phone networks, which are not compatible with the 8100/Pearl.

Look on the charger itself. It will tell you what voltages it can handle - it is a converter.

I would buy one of the AA battery charging devices and then as long as you can get batteries, you can be sure to charge it.

I would say no. Because I think Softbank only has 3G, it doesn't support 2G GSM. Also, I don't think any network support Blackberry data.

Your Pearl charger is 100-240VAC 50/60Hz so it will be fine to charge in Japan or almost anywhere else in the world as long as you have the right plug adapter.

However, our GSM phones do not work on the cellular networks in Japan or S Korea. If you need a mobile phone you would be better to pick up a rental at a kiosk in Narita airport.

Thanks to everyone for your quick responses. Glad to hear I don't need to pick up a converter for the phone charger. However, I won't be needing it if my Pearl doesn't work in Japan. I was hoping to at least access emails and PIN's while over there. I have no need to make phone calls or text message. Oh well. One could only hope!

Just got back from Japan and the answer would be no, the BB Pearl doesn't work even in the Narita airport. Either in the arrival and departure areas of the airport.

It's not going to work there unless you pick up the Curve with Wi-Fi.

The curve with wi-fi DOES NOT WORK either. My other half is in Yokohama (?) now and flew into Narita this week. And had to rent a phone at the airport.
