I've had Content Compression disabled (enabled by default) for over a day, and I still have the lag when I open and send certain contacts' SMS messages. I still have Protection enabled, although I'm not too sure what purpose either serve.

I have not had lag that bad.... Sounds like you might have a bad device... I went to local store and exchanged mine... The new one is much snappier and the new battery door is tight...

My suggestion would be back up and wipe the device clean including all 3rd party apps... See if the lag is still there with nothing but the stock OS loaded... If it still lags big time, then exchange it...

If the lag is gone then install apps one by one and test for lag after each until you find the culprit...
