I'm having trouble with the custom alert tones. I changed them to my preference and it is hit or miss whether or not I get the default or my customized tone. I'm sure all the profile issues will be resolved soon enough.
I guess this is the price we pay for being early adopters.

There may eventually be an OS revision to resolve all of this...until then, here are some helpful hints from the User Guide:
Notification Basics
About notifications and sound profiles
Sound profiles define how your BlackBerry® device notifies you of calendar and task reminders, and incoming messages, calls, and browser
content. Your device has seven preloaded sound profiles: Loud, Medium, Silent, Vibrate Only, Normal, Phone Calls Only, and All Alerts Off.
You can create custom sound profiles so you can set different notification options for different items, set ring tones, or set the volume for
notification.
You can also assign ring tones and notifications to specific contacts in your contact list so that phone calls and messages from the contact are
unique.
Change your ring tone
1. In the sounds application, click Set Ring Tones/Alerts.
2. Click the application or item that you want to change.
3. Perform one of the following actions:
• To use a preloaded ring tone, in the Ringtone field, click a ring tone.
• To use a ring tone that you downloaded, in the Ringtone field, click Browse. Navigate to a folder that contains ring tones. Click a ring
tone.
4. Press the Menu key.
5. Click Save.
Switch sound profiles
In the sounds application, click a sound profile.
Change a sound profile
1. In the sounds application, perform one of the following actions:
• To change the Normal sound profile, click Set Ring Tones/Alerts.
• To change a custom sound profile, click Custom Profiles. Click a profile.
2. Click the application or item that you want to change.
3. Change the notification information.
4. Press the Menu key.
5. Click Save.
Silence your device
In the sounds application, perform one of the following actions:
• To receive LED notification only, click Silent.
• To receive vibrate notification only, click Vibrate Only.
• To turn off all notification, including ring tones and notifications for specific contacts and LED notification, click All Alerts Off.
Create a sound profile
1. In the sounds application, click Custom Profiles.
2. Click Add Custom Profile.
3. Type a name for the profile.
4. Click an application or item.
5. Set the notification information.
6. Press the Menu key.
7. Click Save.
Delete a custom sound profile
You can only delete custom sound profiles.
1. In the sounds application, click Custom Profiles.
2. Highlight a profile.
3. Press the Menu key.
4. Click Delete.
Assign ring tones and notifications to a contact
You can receive different notifications for incoming messages and calls from specific contacts or groups of contacts. Call and message
notifications for your contacts are received even if you switch your sound profile to Silent or Vibrate Only.
1. In the sounds application, click Set Contact Alerts.
2. Click Add Contact Alert.
3. Press the Menu key.
4. Click Add Name.
5. Click a contact.
6. To add additional contacts, repeat steps 3 to 5.
7. Click the application or item that you want to change.
8. Change the notification information.
9. Press the Menu key.
10. Click Save.

I figured this when I read on some other posts and played with it on my phone. I'm now used to setting up the custom profiles, and I have a couple of them working great for me.
I just wish we could delete the existing profiles, like 'Medium' which I'll never use, since my Normal is pretty much set to medium volume settings already.

Still having issues
I set my "Normal" profile up so that I am notified for only SMS/MMS/BBM. Nothing should happen (sound or vibrate) for email. When I am in "Normal", it works right. When I go into "Vibrate Only", it Vibrates for an email, even though it says "No" next to Vibrate for Normal and Vibrate. Any thoughts?

"Vibrate Only" overrides your "Normal" profile settings. I replicated your settings and mine does the same thing.

Does that make sense? In your explanation, I read it to say that it just non-Normal profiles just replace whatever you have with "louder" versions. Shouldn't it do the same for Vibrate?

Regarding the preloaded Loud, Medium and Silent profiles, yes they do change the volume level of your existing audible alert settings in the Normal profile. They do not impact your vibrate settings.
"Vibrate Only" behaves differently in that it overrides the Normal profile and all your alerts will vibrate. Key words are all alerts. Regardless of what you have them set to in Normal. If you prefer a different behavior, then create a custom profile.

More Profile Problems
I have read this entire thread about profiles. I have tried all the suggestions but still no luck. I had my Tour in a "Custom Profile" set up to how I want my phone to respond, but the phone still responded the same way as it did when I had it in "Normal". I had configured the "Normal" profile to how I wanted it but it just wouldn't do it.
In a nut shell, I configured it so when it was in the holster, anything that came to my phone would be some sort of vibration and when not in the holster, sounds only. What actually happens? When in the holster, I do get the vibrations but followed by the sounds/alerts, and when out of holster, responds correctly with only giving my the sounds/alerts.
This is nuts! Please help

Hi Randrgirls, welcome to the Forum.
-Can you please post your settings in detail used in both your custom and normal profiles?
-Do you have any Contact Alerts set up?
-Are you on BIS or BES?
-Do you have any Email Filters set up?

That is the same problem I am having and it is frustrating! I can cheat and go to vibrate, but I shouldn't have to! That is why I have a Blackberry and not a dumbphone. Okay, only one reason but you get the point.
I am on BIS. I have each account set up for custom vibrate and no sound in holster, but there is still sound after the vibration. Out of the holster it is just tone, so it is recognizing the holster.

(disclaimer: i haven't read this entire thread yet)
I was also having a profile problem. Everything was set to my custom ringtone, but would still play the default 'classic' ring on inbound calls. Rather than dig thru forums, I called TSupport. It almost seems like it got fixed by accident, but here's what we did:
Deleted my two custom profiles (both were created on & xfered from a 9530)
Set desired ringtone
Set the 'Normal' profile active & check to see that my custom tone was still listed
Reboot.
Place inbound call while on Normal. (It rang with the correct ringtone)
Re-create custom profile, defining your desired ringtone.
Set new profile active.

I had the settings in both the Normal and Custom the same.
Phone - ringtone, volume 7, Sound in holster - No, LED - On, Vibration - Custom-Medium-10, In/Out of Holster - In Only.
Messages - ringtone, volume -4, Sond in Holster - No, LED - On, Vibration - Custom-Medium-1-In only
Instant messages - ring tone, Volume - 4, Sound in Holster - No, LED - On, Vibration - custom-medium-1-In only.
I do not have any contact alert set up.
If I don't know what BIS or BES are, I don't think I am apart of it.
I do not have any email filters set up.

These are the exact issues I have reported in my support case with RIM. Custom profiles cleared up with a battery pull and seem ok. However, contact alerts exhibit this behavior too. No sounds while holstered for messages. (Phone is
OK)

Just wanted to update the thread:
I just got off the phone with Verizon and they are saying it's the case. They had this problem with the curve as well and the regular plastic case works...

Alright..i am only going to post in this thread to keep it in one place...
Verizon is going to call me tmrw after they have a chat with rim since rim was so busy because of the bbm outage (Verizon didn't even know about it)...
After doing some QA which I do for a living i found the following:
if you set your vibrate to custom, it will still sound in the holster. However, if you just leave it as vibrate only and not make it customizable, it will work the way it's supposed to meaning NOT make a noise when in the holster. Lame right? I tested this on my Dad's storm and I didn't experience the same behavior. When i talk to Verizon i am going ot tell them this and will tell the blackberry rep as well that this is a bug and needs to get fixed. Also i am going to complain about the 9 minutes it takes to boot my damn phone!
And finally, I am going to have rim send me a paycheck ;) LOL
Hopefully this helps ppl out.

Is there a shortcut to get to sounds? I used to press "f" to get to profiles, but now I have to keep the sounds icon on my desktop, which is annoying.
