is there a program out there than will enable me to change which sound plays for different people for sms or text messages? right now by default i can personalize the ringtones for different people but not for text messages. is there one out there and what is good (and cheap?)

Yes it does. I am guessing you have not checked it out yet. From the FAQ title: This workaround will allow you to have specific alerts for email and messages from specific senders.
