Default Upgrade to 9600 from 8830?

Please Login to Remove!

Looking for a second opinion. Here is the situation.

-Previous 2 year plan on with Verizon is up.
-Current phone is BB 8830 World Edition
-College student who uses phone mostly for texting, web browsing, occasionally email and maps.
-Use worldwide roaming capabilities when traveling.

Is it worth it for me to pay the 200-250$ to upgrade to the Tour or should I just stick with this phone until something groundbreaking for Verizon comes out. Thanks.

I would definitely upgrade from the 8830. Just my .02

IMO, it's not worth it, however a lot of other members will disagree. My contract was complete like you and I used my 8830 for work and streaming music. I'm having a lot of signal quality issues with the Tour, so to me it's basically a glorified 8830 with a camera. I'm going to return my Tour and rollback the contract and wait it out. Maybe the Storm 2 with wifi? There's news that the Pre is coming early next year. Who knows?!

You do get a 30 day trial so try out it if you're not sure.

Definately worth the upgrade, no contest. I had my 8830 since it's inception, same as Tour. Tour is faster, better speakers/sound, much better and easier to read keyboard, better looking and a far better screen. A far improved product over the 8830!

I upgraded my two-year old 8830 to the Tour. I couldn't be happier!

Web Browsing, Display and Application memory space are the big convince-rs.

IMHO.....I thing you should switch.....and SINCE you use the worldphone all over...you can unlock it ...while the 8830 (well for me anyway...) could not be unlocked..
The tour is a superb phone....very fast...no glitches....yet.
good luck!

I just went from a 8830 to a 9630 Tour. While there are some quirks/bugs or some things I don't care for on the Tour (see my random posts I've made about certain issues that have been bugging me), I am still very a happy overall with my 9630 Tour over my previous 8830 WE phone. It's just more updated and runs faster. Google maps runs and updates faster on my 9630 than on the 8830, as well as Opera and the standard BB browser. IMO, the keyboard took some getting used to since I was used to the 8830, but now I've gotten used to it and it's just as good.

If you have the cash, I say update and get the 9630 Tour as it's definitely worth it over the 8830.

I just upgraded from the 8830 and think the Tour is great. I use it with our BES and all the other apps I use are faster. Viigo seems to slow it down some, but I believe that the application's fault. I like the screen and keyboard better, but the trackball takes a little getting used to.

The main reason I upgraded is my two years with the 8830 were up and I used the 8830 for tethering. The EVDO Rev A speed is great, getting 1+mbs in most places.

I also upgraded from the 8830 to the 9630. The improvements that mattered most to me are:

Increased ROM to 256MB (from 64MB on 8830)
3.2 MP Camera
High Resolution display is a great improvement
Browsing speed has improved
3.5 Stereo Headset Jack

With my 8830 I was having problems with memory leaks and I couldn't install many of the programs that I wanted because of the lack of ROM.

There will also be a version of the 9930 available next year with Wifi.

So, if you're currently happy and not having problems, you may want to wait until the one with wifi comes out.
