People are getting different answers for this question. The person I called at customer service said that it would count as SMS and he later convinced me to get an unlimited text plan because I would go over if I used aim. I don't know about the other programs because I mostly use bbm and aim. Some are saying that the messages would use data, I guess well find out when we get our bills next month.

If you are talking about the ones that come with the 8320 right out of the box, they use data.

tt1987, I am guessing the customer service person thought it was the OZ client you were talking about. Also, you don't have to wait until the end of the month, you can go online and check, it will list your current usage for the month.

The new 8320 IM programs definitely use data. No more sms.

data or SMS, the AIM client on the 8320 sucks cause it only holds 30 contacts.

My advice is to go with Jivetalk. I find the program as good as the sidekick AIM programs.

It uses DATA.. the reason it used to use SMS was because the EDGE network was not setup yet and SMS was easier and more reliable. As the times changed, so did the software. Almost nothing uses SMS anymore.

I called TMO today and the CSR told me that using IM uses SMS. So I just downloaded Jivetalk.

For the 8320 the CSR was wrong. It's data. For the other models it's the Oz Messenger and it's sms.

JiveTalk is good though, so you're still ok!

Wirelessly posted (BlackBerry8320/4.2.2 Profile/MIDP-2.0 Configuration/CLDC-1.1 VendorID/100)

You wanna know for sure??? Use the program for 2 or 3 days and lookup you're current usage history on t-mobile.com.... You'll see either a lot of sms usage or high data use.. Then you know for sure but yeah like I said it uses data...
