Enabling 3G on O2 causes chronic rebooting

As the title suggests, I have isolated the problem. Specifically, when I alter mobile network settings to "3G & 2G" my phone (Bold 9700) plunges into a continuous reboot cycle from which it cannot be recovered. However, when I have the phone set to only 2G it functions fine, albeit with cripplingly slow speeds that make you want to mate your phone with a cinder block... or blow torch.
I have recently loaded BBOS6 but before you say anything this issue was the same for the older OS. So don't even bother.
Yes, my phone is unlocked and my carrier is O2 whom I have contacted regarding this issue and all they could less than helpfully tell me was something vague to the effect of "our network might not like your phone". As if this is a f***** schoolyard where my bold isn't accepted amongst the 'popular' kids. This is BS, I want to be able to use 3G because otherwise it sort of defeats the purpose no? I'll just dig out my string and tin-cans instead.
Anyone know of any solutions? Cheers.
