It just didn't seem to be as quick on the 4.2 I was using before upgrading. I understand it takes up memory to use it, but it seems to be at 14 very quickly. And most of the usage is reading emails and using the bb browser. I don't use 3rd party apps all that often.

It does seem like it's faster. However, remember that there are a lot more features, including html, etc.

FWIW, it did NOT recover - I had to run JL_Cmdr to wipe the Curve and reload from scratch - which is once again in progress. Hopefully it won't repeat.

Usually a 523 error can be recovered. Simply run app loader again and see if you can remove the 3rd party application causing the issue. JL_Cmder works too, though.

I usually remove 3rd party apps one at a time. I'll start with the more obscure, low-budget apps first. Google Maps isn't usually my first app to remove. Themes, smaller not as well programmed apps are usually the offenders.

All OS's are universal. The OS will load according to the brand of BB it's loading to. The only "branding" is the vendor.xml file that you will be deleting. Once that's deleted, it's no longer "branded."

After upgrading do we need to turn on or do anything to use html?

You can only receive html emails. You can't create them.

I need some help. I tried to upgrade to the 4.5.xxx.81 OS, and didn't like it. The Address Book spacing was wonky, the Blackberry was very sluggish, and I wanted to return to the 4.2.2.194 version. I tried to install the old OS over the 4.5 version, but it would not let me install it (perhaps is was just my unfamiliarity with the location of the settings and options in DTM 4.6)... so I uninstalled everything and reinstalled the DTM 4.2 sp2 and the 4.2.2.194 OS on my PC.

When I tried to reload the OS, it would not go - saying there was NO OS installed on my PC... so I used JL_CMDR to wipe my 8310 and uninstalled and reinstalled the 4.2.2.194 OS.

I then tried to load the OS again, and everything seemed to go ok, but a weird thing was that it prompted me to OVERWRITE/REMOVE the 4.5xxx OS from the WIPED 8310 (?). I said 'ok' and it started to load, but stopped with an error:
Device communications error encountered. [A:0x00000022]

No clue what that error is, what caused it, or what to do about it...

Can someone please help me get my 8310 going again?

fonejunkie, the normal downgrade process involved first uninstalling the newer OS from your PC.
How do I downgrade the OS on my BlackBerry? - BlackBerryFAQ

I'm not familiar with that error either. I would first suggest that you simply do as suggested in the downgrade thread and attempt again. If it doesn't work, head back to Jl_cmder to wipe it. It does work well.

I've been running various releases of 4.5 for some time now. I would suggest you try it again, in conjunction with John Clark's memory optimization thread, and give it some time. You will learn to live with the the address book's new double spacing (which is there for the Company name field to appear) and find new features you like.

What a major PITA... but I think I am on the way back now. I had to uninstall the OS and the DTM software, manually clean the registry of all RIM entries, run JL_CMDR again to once again wipe the 8310... then did the battery pull, rebooted the PC... reloaded the DTM (v4.5) and the OS (4.2.2.194) and then do the 'cleanup' on the OS stuff - remove the vendor.alx file, and kill all of the apps that I wanted to remove (per JClark's memory optimization thread).

One result of Googling the error message said to disable the power management feature of the USB hubs in the PC's device manager, which I did, and required another reboot...

It now appears to be installing the older OS again... and if so, I will then need to restore all of my data and third party apps...

I have 'hacked' and 'tweaked' OSes for Motorolas and Blackberries for the past 5 or 6 years and never had an experience like this one... I now have two new mantras that I will repeat until the urge to upgrade passes:

1. If it ain't broke, don't fix it (only upgrade for a specific feature or to fix a specific problem).

2. There's no place like home... there's no place like home... there's no place like home.

hahahaha, good. So true.

I have to disagree on the upgrade for the heck of it. For most, it is a simple seamless process. However, it can be daunting for the uninitiated, and even for the initiated like yourself, a rare glitch can throw the process into a stew.

I am wondering it the root of the problem was the Surreal theme? I remember reading that it would not work with 4.5xxx, but apparently there are different levels of "would not work with".

I am reinstalling a couple of apps and then I will be good to go. And no more modding/upgrading for at least 24 hours... or at least 12 hours... maybe 2 or 3 hours, for sure

One final question. I created a backup using the Switch Devices method... can I selectively restore parts of that backup? Specifically, I want to pull a theme back that I cannot find online anymore.

Yes, you can open that "yourpin.alx" file and restore only that theme in the check/uncheck boxes.

Ok I swallowed my pride and decided to download this os. I did a clean wipe and install. I enjoy this os and I have not had any problems. In fact, I dont have the little boxes anymore in the sms messages. This is the best by far I have seen. Oh yeah and I got blackberry maps on my 8310. lol

Surreal caused serious problems for many people w/OS 4.5. See also http://www.blackberryforums.com/medi...installed.html

I installed the OS from my work computer (DM4.5). Now when I try to update apps on my home computer (DM4.5), the program wants to downgrade a number of my apps etc.

Is there a way to stop this from happening?

thanks
