Hey there, i came to this forum for some help with a firmware update and other stuff for my blackberry 8100 on o2 UK.

My current firmware version is V4.2.0.64 - Is there a newer firmware update ?.
I tried downloading opera mini, but it seems my firmware version isnt on there. ( which makes me beleive there is a firmware update )

Also, i bought this blackberry from a friend and just put a new o2 sim card in.
I know you need a data plan, for internet browsing, but im on pay as you go. So paying for the data plan isnt something i want to do.

I read somewhere that you can still browse without the data plan using opera, does anyone have any information on this?

So my phones gone throught the update process and i clicked 'close' on the last screen, my phone rebooted.
Now its just showing the hour glass rotating, and nothing is happening. is this normal ?

Hi there.


As posted above you can't browse the web without a data plan, unless of course you have WiFi, but alas the 8100 does not.

However you if you can afford a data plan you can do the following... dl Opera Mini 4.2 (found Mini 5 too slow) to a PC and install via BBDM. You will need to change the APN - TCP.

Home > BB Menu > Options > Advanced Options > TCP scroll to APN and change to your mobile carrier domain/access point > Save.

You won't have BBM, MMS or BB Browser or Push email :( which is what the BB is best at. An alternative to email is LogicMail - which can be configured for push.

Be careful you don't incur per mb data charges. That could get quite expensive.
