I have recently purchased an 8820 and an application I require on the phone requires an upgrade of my OS to version 4.5 (currently 4.2).

My issue is I have no software disk or USB cable for my BlackBerry, it only came with a charger.

How do I get the right software onto my PC and how do I then get the upgraded OS onto my BlackBerry?

Is there any way I could put the software directly onto the BlackBerry to avoid the use of the PC?

I know nothing about BlackBerry other than how to use it so a step by step guide would be useful!

Welcome to the forums.

I would strongly suggest checking out BlackBerry FAQ - BlackBerryFAQ. The only way to upgrade your OS is by connecting the device to your PC via the USB cable.

When you get a PC and a usb cable then go to:
BlackBerry - Update your Device Software

Just borrow a friend's PC and USB to Mini-USB cable
You'll only need it about 45 minutes.

Thanks, I have a PC (and laptop), just didn't have the software or cable.

I now have a cable and downloaded the software necessary, its updating as I type, thanks for the advice!

Out of interest, do I need to reload the applications onto the phone? or does it do it as a part of the update?

The Desktop Manager Software will automatically reload your apps back onto the phone. You may lose some settings, but the apps will be there.
