just thought i'd start a thread to collect information on everyone's wifi/uma status...

if you have an 8320 or an 8820... please reply as i think it will me as well as others who are having difficulty with this...

please fill in the following details...

- blackberry model and firmware
- router and firmware
- paying for tmo hotspot @home?
- wifi/uma working successfully?
- wifi/uma working at starbucks/borders?
- using bluetooth at the same time?
- did you use the device change wizard?
- additional details?

here's my profile...
- blackberry model and firmware : 8320 v4.2.2.180
- router and firmware - USROBOTICS USR8054 v1.67
- paying for tmo hotspot @home? NO
- wifi/uma working successfully? NO
- wifi/uma working at starbucks/borders? YES, BUT THEN IT ASKS ME TO SIGN UP- using bluetooth at the same time? NO
- did you use the device change wizard? YES, THEN RELOADED NEW FIRMWARE V4.2.2.180
- additional details?
- connects at home successfully only when all security is disabled
- yellow icon "-" displays when connected through WEP/WPK security
- DHCP enabled
- QoS not available on router (not sure if that's important)

can people chime in and give their status? if you don't know the answer, just leave blank... i'm looking mainly to see what router has been successful...

The 8820 won't get UMA.

Did you load the certificates from http://mobile.blackberry.com?

Bluetooth and wifi together is a known issue. The frequencies conflict at times.

I also have a WTR54GS (travel router) that has no QoS and it supports my UMA just fine. QoS is mainly a battery saving feature. UMA will work without it.

i verified my certificates and they are present...

i am beginning to suspect that it is my router that is the root of my non-connectivity... usrobotics usr8054, it's at least three years old...

i think i'm going to get a linksys... should i get any particular linksys? i was thinking of the wrt54g or the wrt54gs... will either work fine?

Either would be fine i'm sure. I have the TMO linksys and it works great.

Hey JC, actually QoS is not for power saving, it prevents high speed data transfers which consume all available bandwidth from "starving" the phone so that the signal starts getting choppy or loosing connection.

WiFi WMM is the feature which lowers power consumption by the WiFi Radio.

It's my understanding that neither of these technologies are required to work fully, but without QoS, an internet file transfer can cause you to have a really bad day when the neice is downloading music on BitTorrents or something.

- wifi/uma working at starbucks/borders: Yes. Just like sgtcasey, my phone also switched to UMA when I was stopped at a light where there was a Starbucks nearby.
- using bluetooth at the same time: Yes. I've been able to use the Samsung WEP200 and Samsung WEP410
- did you use the device change wizard: No

WPA2-PSK enabled

Thanks for the clarification. On my router they are in the same location. Wireless QoS contains the WMM setting. I'm no expert in routers and their terminology so I'll stand corrected.

Under QoS I have WMM: Enabled (I understand this one.)

I also have "No Acknowledgment: Disabled."

The help says, No Acknowledgement: Enable this option if you would like to disable acknowledgement. If this option is enabled, the router will not resend data if an error occors.

Do I want this disabled or enabled. Default is disabled.

I'm not a network engineer, nor did I stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night, but I did read the QoS and WMM entries on Wikipedia.

QoS means Quality of Service and it is a general term for anything which involves managing the use of the limited networking resources. There are a lot of algorithms targeted at providing "QoS".

WMM means Wi-Fi MultiMedia (sometimes called Wireless Multimedia Extensions - WME) and is a form of QoS for wireless clients. It changes the way that the wireless devices communicate to make it easier to achieve a steady stream. There is an extension to WMM called WMM PowerSave (WMM-PS?) which goes a step further to make it easier for battery powered devices to save their battery power (it looks like it makes it easy for the battery device to control or predict when packets will be sent to it - I guess so that it can modulate the power on its receiver on a predictable schedule?)

- wifi/uma working at starbucks/borders? Yes (only tried it once)
- using bluetooth at the same time? Haven't tried
- did you use the device change wizard? Only after reading what not to restore so I avoided the problems

I had occasional dropouts until I set QoS settings on my router:
wired QoS, set ports 500/4500 from my 8320's IP to high priority
WISH, set ports 500/4500 from my 8320's IP to "VO" (voice priority)
Update:
I had some bad stuttering on a UMA call tonight (and it even dropped to EDGE at one point). I just updated my router to fw1.10 which is supposed to improve wired performance (nothing mentioned about wireless). I will try to upgrade my phone to fw...180 to see if that helps

my wifi/uma problem has been fixed!! woohoo!!

solution was to get a new router... here's my new profile...

- wifi/uma working successfully? YES, PERFECTLY
- wifi/uma working at starbucks/borders? YES, BUT THEN IT ASKS ME TO SIGN UP- using bluetooth at the same time? NO

- EVERYTHING WORKS GREAT ON MY HOME WIFI NOW
- TURNED OFF TMOBILE SIGNAL AND USED EVERYTHING WIFI AND NO PROBLEMS WHATSOEVER AND CONNECTED AT WIFI/DSL SPEEDS
- USED OPERA MINI 4, INTERNET BROWSER, GMAIL, GOOGLE MAPS, EVERYTHING WAS GREAT!!

If you don't get UMA even at a Tmo hotspot then I'd givr Tmo a call. I'm mobile and can't read that whole thread.

Make sure the certificates are installed.

Make sure that in options >mibile network that you have "wifi preferred" and "automatic" selected.

Also, you'll need to make sure that you have an address supplied at t-mobile.com for 911. If you haven't entered that there, be sure you do that or UMA may not work.
Also, check www.blackberryfaq.com for other good info on wifi/UMA.

Actually UMA was working for me until last wednesday. I have been on the phone and awaiting an escalated call back from them.

They sent me a third phone, plugged it in today, same issue.

Certificates are installed.
I double checked my 911 address, and it is there.
And confirmed "wi-fi" and "automatic" are set.

Hopefully I will hear back soon from t-mo...

Are you using the BB Data Plan to get Opera Mini 4, etc. What services can I get using UMA and e-mail plan only?

- wifi/uma working successfully? No. Trying to connect to router causes phone to reboot! This happens whether security is on or off (WPA).

- additional details? I've talked to support, they have no idea what's wrong
