Default UMA Incoming Calls Outage 11/11/2007

Please Login to Remove!

I have only had my Curve for a few days. I set it up on my home network mostly because I want faster data services. I have plenty of minutes and good T-Mobile coverage in my home - don't need WiFi calling.

This evening... it appears several calls and an SMS never made it to my phone. When I turned off the WiFi, calling in worked and the SMS messages came in (they were queued).

Does this mean I have to leave WiFi OFF unless I really need faster data?? (and then plan to lose calls and SMS)

Very shocked.

All should work as normal if you have UMA on your device. That being said, I did have an issue the other night where incoming calls wouldn't go to my phone while in UMA. Outgoing worked fine, though. I turned off wifi and tried and calls would come in. I turned wifi/UMA back on and calls came in normally.

Edit: Just tried this again. Tried calling my phone while in UMA and I get "the call can't be completed as dialed. please check the number and dial again." I turn off UMA and the call goes through.

Trying a battery pull....

I'm waiting on the edge of my seat...

I also wonder if a UMA router resolves this? (not sure if that's the correct terminology or if they even exist - I mean a router that is UMA friendly)

It's still happening to me right now. While on UMA, calls won't go through. I can make outgoings ok, but incomings are not making it. This happened at home a day or two ago (at least that I'm aware of) and now is happening at a hotel. May be time to get on the horn to TMo.

BIG PAIN! I read something in other threads regarding UMA dropping out. Not sure if that's related.

So, are you calling Tmo?

Yeah, on the phone now. UMA is strong and not "dropping off." I'm using another TMo Pearl to call myself and I get, "Your call cannot be completed as dialed. Please check the number and dial again. Error 077T"

I've also gotten a similar message with the error "WA0651" and also an occasional "all circuits are busy now" message.

Switch to GPRS/EDGE and the call routes right through.

I would like to place the following bet on the table...

"It's an OS problem and we are waiting for RIM to fix it. Until then, avoid using WiFi."

...

So far, according to TMo PDA/UMA support "it's a known issue in upstate New York." Still working on it...

"since you're on a hotel wifi there's not much we can do..."

I'm not letting him off that easy....still on the phone with him.

What about SMS?

I literally turned off WiFi and messages sent while WiFi was enabled came streaming in.

It's an issue in Phoenix too!

Call in! My SMS's are coming and going just fine, though. Just no calls coming in.

I just got told that it's a service issue in upstate New York and that they are working on the problem. Doesn't explain your issue in Arizona, though. Figures, too...I'm here all week and no UMA. And, to top it off, it's GPRS and not EDGE on a TMobile tower.

Ok. It's too late here to test it at home - people asleep. But I will get to it tomorrow! I'll report back!

Saying it's an issue in an area really doesn't make any sense to me with UMA. You can shut the cellular radio off completely, and it will still establish a UMA connection if wifi is available. How does that have anything to do with a localized area besides ISP outages?

He said that even though it's UMA that it still routes through a cell tower somewhere.

Hmm, I question that statement. I can bring the BB up with only the wifi radio active and it will establish a UMA connection, not really a complete test to see if the GSM radio is being used or not.

Just curious, if you call 611 on your phone, then attempt to call it, do you get an incoming call waiting call or does the incoming call still goto voicemail or give a strange message?

Here in Seattle, incoming and outgoing UMA seems to be working fine. The only problem I have is that I have two access points in my large house and it takes the phone some time (5 mins) to switch, so when its between points I get the no service problem even though UMA is still showing. If im in one location, though, I havent had any problems. Im using a linksys wrt54g router with latest firmware and running wpa2

I'm here in Washington D.C. and this explains why my Mom tried to call me the weekend before last and she got the error "the call can't be completed as dialed. please check the number and dial again." She said it lasted all day on Saturday, every time she called. I use UMA anytime I'm in my house, since the T-Mobile service is not that great inside. I see now that it must have been a UMA issue after reading this post and I hope the reliable will continue to improve, because I love the UMA feature.

Outage yesterday, here in Connecticut, as well. Coincidentally I also had a Charter cable-modem outage yesterday, so it took me a little while to figure out that they were both broken.

Today I received a call but could barely hear it until the phone switched away from UMA to the cellular network. So it's possible that there is still an issue.

This was the first major UMA problem for me. I love UMA and have nothing but great things to say about it. I do not have a T-Mobile router and don't believe you really need one. I have a high-end non-consumer router at work and a *very* old 802.11b netgear router at home that works great.
