The main criteria these days for who launches a new blackberry first is quite simple, how big an order will you put in and thats why the first (or only one) to launch stuff always tends to be att or verizon in the states or due to their global size t-mobile or vodafone.

What haven't rogers launched that would have worked on their network?

Looking on their site the only ones that spring to mind is the 8520 which probably isn't a priority since they already sell the older curves and the 8900. The only other possible would seem to be the storm and the gsm version of that seemed to be a vodafone-exclusive so it would have been out of rogers' hands anyway.

News update as of today:

First Official BlackBerry "Bold 9700/Onyx" (T-Mobile) Image; '09 Launch Expected - CIO.com - Business Technology Leadership

Tmobile will have the 9700.

Now to figure out how much more I'll have to pay versus my currently plan to get 3g if anything at all?

Id love to see T-mob UK get this by Jun 2010.
Although the 3G is gonna be trouble as T-mob US run on different 3G frequencies than UK.

Hmm, lets hope!

Default 9700 Release date on AT&T

Does anyone know (or have an educated guess) on a release date in the US for this device? Thanks.

I thought the Onyx was the AT&T Version while the Driftwood was the T-Mobile version....

No real difference between what the two companies will be getting, so its probably simpler to label them all as onyx even if rim have carrier-specific codenames.

Istr that they had multiple codenames for the bold before it came out as well, so it wouldn't be out of character for them to do it again for a device that was going to multiple carriers at once.

I love Blackberry, but they need to come up with a lighter, less bulky look. It seems that the newer ones look as bulky as the old 8703's.

The 9700 seems to be about the size of an 8900 and I doubt many people would call one of those bulky and its noticeably smaller than an 8700 if you check the dimensions of them both.

Realistically, blackberries will never be the narrowest or thinnest phones due to things like using removable batteries and needing enough space for the keyboard, but thats a fair way from being bulky.

The 9700 is in between the 8900 and the 9000 in size. There's a video on youtube showing all 3.

Sure that wasn't a vid of a tour, there's been pics out there where it was put against the 8900 and it was the same size give or take differences in the design on the edges of the two devices.
