New Nokia handhelds w/ BlackBerry Connect

All of these should be available in Europe now. They do not appear to be available in Asia (odd). They will be available in North America early next year. The E61 definitely looks nice, and I'm very curious how it stacks up to the BlackBerry, Treo and Q. Definitely a nice entry into this form-factor market. It appears that its only available with WCDMA and WLAN in Europe, currently.

Well the links is a little messed up... first link is actually the E61, which is very blackberry-ish... second link is the E60, which is kinda like... a phone... the third link just looks too fragile.

I like the form factor of the qwerty model. Although not sure I like the joystick navigation--I've become so accustomed to the clickwheel.

E61 is the ultimate device for pros.. it has everything you can thing off.
Now I am little bit confused because looks like RIM is helping nokia to brings their products and market the products for serious enterprise customers. It looks like some day RIM will become Nokia-Canada.
I don't blame them. I like Nokia phone and that is the only brand that i have ever used before switching to BB 6230-->7230-->7730-->7290 (today)
Trackeel is lot easier and better to scroll thru..

I agree, that e61 is some device. Connects via everyway imaginable and it streams video/audio. I've got my eye on that baby!

Opening up blackberry connect to other phone manufacturers is a good move by RIM. I don't think it would cannibalize sales because only the email connectivity features of BES would be available for deployment, not the device management features. Sweet phones thought. Can't wait to see one. -Cap

They have to!
All RIM will make will be software. They cannot survive if they keep making hardware that is only targeted to one tiny sector of the market.

I'm sure you'll be able to compose messages while on the phone (such as you can currently with BB's), however no existing air interface allows simultaneous voice and data. This may change with EVDO rev A or with UMTS....(which this device apparently supports). |

If this is released in North America, it will be much different than the European model you are reading about, so don't take it for face value. WCDMA will allow that simultaneous audio/voice and data transmissions - unfortunately, we won't be seeing that for another few years, if we don't just skip a wireless generation.

jibi, be aware we do have WCDMA/UMTS networks in the United States.
AT&T built 'em before Cingular took over. Five? Six? cities have it already.

What kind of OS is the e61 going to operate on? Is it going to be worth leaving the stable RIM platform to jump ship to a powerhouse phone like the e61? That phone is so loaded with features its actually kind of scarry.......Did I read it right and it even supports VoIP?

The e61 is a good looking device. With all of the competition in wireless e-mail I wonder if RIM and Nokia would ever merge. Microsoft would then have a big challenge in the mobile space.

That would be really bad for everyone as it would have to be Nokia buying RIM and Nokia is just awful at dealing with the enterprise. They worse than really suck. They really have no idea. Over the past 5 years they have had countless efforts to get into the enterprise space with no success.
Teaming up with RIM (or anyone else for that matter) is the only way Nokia is going to make any progress, so this is probably the best move they have ever made. There attempt at making a server is flat out awful and it will probably never have a follow up.
They really make pretty devices though (for what that is worth in the wireless data world).
Also RIM will continue to make devices. Getting out of making devices would be really a bad move since it is 70% of their revenue and in terms of wireless data capabilities RIM makes the still makes the best devices by quite a distance.

what gives?
the release from NOKIA shows the e61 with a color-coded numeric keypad configuration placed on the device in the most spastic fashion.
but engadget's hands-on, side-by-side to the Treo (*blech*) shows a more refined and friendlier set-up, including "normalized" placement of the "*" and "#" keys.
don't get me wrong. i'll still put the thing down my pants, but what's up with this? |
