I am not questioning anyone's judgment or suggesting in any way that we should be doing illegal things. Just curious as to why this is illegal if we have purchased legitimate phones from our carriers and are paying for the services we use. Thanks!

The process is not illegal. The software known as MFI was internally developed by RIM for engineering use. Someone leaked the software outside and is now floating around the Internet. It's not illegal to modify your phone. It's yours to keep and do whatever you want with it so long as you don't steal from anyone else (ie. use it to make free phone calls or hack AT&T system).

I don't think I said the "process" was illegal, I said the software was illegal, for lack of a better term at the time. The theft of the software and leaking it to the world was the 'illegal' act.
Using the software is actually illegal, as you and I don't have "rights" to the software. It is RIM's, not ours. Like copying movies and giving them away, pirating in some terms. You define it as you like, but it is intellectual property stolen from RIM.
I don't care if you use it, fine with me. Just don't distribute it here.

Have you tried turning on dial from home screen? I have that turned on. If off then you would get the hotkeys working.

Just tried it, and it did not change. I still get the help screen. I am on the dc/dc Business VSM, which is based on the engineering one. I can get to the escreen if I generate the code for it.

It is very illegal to steal software guys & gals. This software was created for the internal use of RIM's engineer's. If your thought process is well they leaked it its their fault well see how well that holds up if you are found with it on your machine. I used it to unbrand my phone as well and it was gone of my system 2 minutes later. Don't hide behind the "Well how was I suppose to know I wasn't to use it?" attitude cause it wont last long and if you can only find it on torrents there is a reason for that....

Okay well good to confirm that. I wonder if there is another way to get that engineering screen up. Because mass storage was disabled on mine as well when I did the debranding I had to go into those menus to re-enable it. Mine works fine. or else just re-debrand your phone using the other VSM and then you'll get the option.

I honestly don't use mass-storage mode, so I don't really care. I pull the memory card out if I need to do anything with it. I can get to the escreen easily enough though if I want to.

what other method do you use to get to it or can you discuss without fear of a hand slap by a moderator?

Hmmm, that is no different. You used it.
Like shooting someone and tossing the gun off the bridge, does not make one any less guilty.
But I understand where you are coming from.

There is a publicly available website that generates the code for you (don't remember the link), or the utility can do it.

Why do you need a code? I never used a code once while debranding my phone...

That's because you use the Engineering VSM. If you don't have the engineering VSM then it takes you to the Help Me! screen. You can use a code at that screen to get into the engineering screen.

I'm having the same problem. Traded my iPhone for a Bold and am not able to get the SIM card recognized in windows. I made sure Mass Media is enabled and Auto Enabled. Can someone instruct me on what I need to do to fix this? Thanks.

Draconis, pull the battery on your BB while it is powered on.
REboot the PC.
Make certain your BB > USB is plugged to a main rear USB port, not a hub or front PC port.
check again.
