Question Why such a long wipe time ?

Please Login to Remove!

It seems that with each generation of device the wipe time gets longer and longer. I can't believe that a 8700v has so much more memory than a 7730 that it takes 45 minutes to wipe ? The 7730 used to be done in less than 5.

This is not just a single device too, all our 8700v's take the same amount of time, some even longer.

Are there any tricks to speed up this process ?

Anecdotal evidence seems to indicate that if you wipe by getting the password wrong, the device comes back a usable state quicker than if you choose Wipe Handheld from the security options. We have had devices take over an hour to return with the latter method

Thanks,

It has been a while since I've performed a wipe on my 8700's but I don't recall them ever taking that long...

I think the more data on the device the longer it takes. I've not noticed any significant wipe times though.

I had to perform a wipe while on the phone with RIM tech support. Normally, the wipe only takes 5 to 10 min. however, it took closer to an hour with me and the reason that he told me was that if I had my password enabled and content protection enabled, the device has to go through the decryption process and THEN wipe it clean, so the lengthy time is caused by the decryption process, not the actual wipe itself. So, if you want the wipe to go quick, disable your password and content protection will be disabled by default.

Yeah, I was gonna say what Outrigger said, if there's any encryption on the device, it makes it substantially longer to wipe it.

Thanks Outrigger

That is exactly our scenario with password and content protection enabled, so at least that explains why the process is so slow.

Still doesn't explain why a 7730 talking to the same BES with the same security profile ( with content protection ) manages the same process in minutes. Unless being an older device, it must do something different.

Kind of an obvious statement, but there you go
