I would like to do what I can to extend the battery time between charges and would like your suggestions.

Also, I would like yo know if I open an application and then do not exit it but instead I het the return key or switch applications does this continue to waste battery usage?

As for your second question, you should always close each app rather than exit out as you suggested, especially if it is a data intensive app. You will find that could save some battery life.
