Data charges to current phone plan?

Sorry if I'm posting this in the wrong place, or if this has already been answered, but...
I just purchased a Pearl and put my sim card in it. My only concern is - is this going to affect my current phone plan? I don't have a data plan, but I didn't set up an email account either (plan on doing that a little later). I get a certain amount of MB a month, which is included in my existing plan. I didn't want the bill to come and there be all of these new data charges because of the new phone.
