After a couple weeks of searching, scouring forums, and trial and error, I have found a great means to convert videos! I wanted to find the absolute best quality conversions so that I could put my coworkers' iPhones to shame. It worked.

The program is Videora iPod Converter. It takes a bit of tweaking, but the final outcome is fantastic. I have used this to convert everything from my DIVX/XVID surf movies, Wild China and Planet Earth 720p .mkv files to even my .flv files from Youtube!

When installing the program, make sure to select the iPhone as the model, as it has the same resolution as the Bold.

The program is very easy to use for beginners, as well as being intuitive for advanced users.

For beginners there is an easy to follow step by step process to convert just about any file, and for those who require the best, there's a lot that can be done to ensure that you are getting the most out of your files.


The Bold supports the following formats:

• H.264 video, up to 1.5 Mbps, 640 by 480 pixels, 30 frames per second, Low-Complexity version of the H.264 Baseline Profile with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats
  
• H.264 video, up to 768 Kbps, 320 by 240 pixels, 30 frames per second, Baseline Profile up to Level 1.3 with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats
  
• MPEG-4 video, up to 2.5 Mbps, 640 by 480 pixels, 30 frames per second, Simple Profile with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats

I got my best results when I used "Power Mode" and entered the settings menu to "edit" (set up) specifics for a few different encoding profiles:

• H.264 480x320 768kbps Stereo/128kbps Advanced
• H.264 VGA 768kbps Stereo/128kbps Advanced
• MPEG4 480x320 768kbps Stereo/128kbps Advanced
• MPEG4 VGA 768kbps Stereo/128kbps Advanced

I found that the quality was better with the VGA as it has higher resolution (duh) and it really seemed to cut down on the artifacts in the videos.

I haven’t had much time to play with this, and I have only experimented on files which are less than two gigabytes in size. This being said, if you find any better means to get killer video out of this program, please let me know!! Also, please follow up with your success stories of both what files have worked and looked best.

Easiest I've ever seen/used is Media Studio for Blackberry. Supports Pearl and Curve for sure, may have added others by now. Brain-dead simple to use and extremely reliable.

Version 2.0 now supports the Bold.

Handbrake works good on a mac

We have Xilisoft Video Converter Ultimate at work. My boss has had good luck using it to put DVDs and such on his 8800.

I used it to convert some DVDs ripped with DVD decrypter and they were good for about the first 10 minutes but the video and audio went out of sync. I don't know if the source or the conversion was at fault.

I'm trying it to see how it handles conversions of various "downloaded files"

I'm using the "iPhone MPEG-4(480x320)(*.mp4)" profile.
