Default 8310 (Gps) on Tmobile

Please Login to Remove!

I have the 8320, but I would like GPS. Use it more than Wifi (is this just for hotspots or do you need it for a router. Sprint said u don't need wifi for a router at home ??? didn't make sense)

I was given the option of selling it on Ebay (I did) unlocked and getting an unlocked 8310

I have a few questions that I would like to know if anyone has experience, or answers or input

1. Will tmobile have the internet codes -- tmo blackberry dept said blackberries don't need wap/internet codes and since we have a curve they have the books ? for the 8310 correct?

2. What will be the best place to buy the 8310? No place will have a warranty with it right? Buy from a place that has an extra year or two for $35

3. Is the best route if i really want gps with no receiver to lug around in pocket or keychain to get it internally? or have people regretted doing this?

4. I will have to get a program, telenav being the most popular? Now even when Tmo HAS Gps like the 8800 there is still a monthly fee, UNLIKE ATT and their phones that have it, 8310, there is NO monthly fee. The tmo rep did not even know. Anyone know, or would this be a RIM or Telenav question.

Thanks to all for your help

First of all, yes, you need a wifi blackberry in order to use a router at home or hotspots.

Q1: Blackberries do need wap/internet codes (TMo is wap.voicestream.com) for many applications to work (like Opera Mini, BBWeather, etc.) There are occasions where the 8310 may not get the proper service books from TMmobile for using the browser so that could be a problem if you want to use the oem browser.

Q2. The best place to buy the 8310 is from AT&T (or another carrier that offers it.) There are lots of other places but not sure about any warranties.

Q3. The 8310 does have built in GPS and it should work with whatever app you want to use.

Q4: There is a fee for TeleNav from all the carriers. It's not free for anyone. You can use free apps like BBMaps and Google Maps for free.

GSM PhoneSource - When Only The Best Will Do started selling unlocked 8310's for $390. They are a reputable store and it isnt that bad of a price.

Default Thanks John!!!

I like your new avatar.

1. So yes, T-mobile said they do have the codes because of having a curve, i.e. 8320 on their network. But you say the OEM browser I may have a hard time with. This is the regular "globe browser" and I would still have a problem even if Tmo says they have codes?

2. the best place to buy a 8310 is from ATT. so u would buy it from there locked and get a unlock code from one of what some refer to as the shady places online, as opposed to buying it unlocked online?

3. glad the gps will work

4. So even tho it is internal, if people use Telenav with ATT THEY TOO PAY? hmm good. So if I use the BB or Google, I will have no voice?

1. There aren't really "codes." There is an entry you need to put into the TCP settings. It has nothing to do with the 8320 specifically.

2. You can buy them from GSMPhonesource as posted above.

4. TeleNav isn't free on any carrier. Correct--no voice with BBMaps or Google.

Internal vs external and the carrier are irrelevant. If you choose a pay-for GPS app then you need to pay for it. There are free options but in my experience you're getting what you're paying for.

If you want to use the GPS, you need to have a BB dataplan for BBMaps, GoogleMaps or TeleNav. They all only download portions of the map and map data cannot be stored on the BB or the SD card.

Before you buy or sell a BB, check out the FAQ on buying a BB on ebay. it will give you a lot of info on how to make it as painless and trouble free as possible.
