Default BB Maps and Google Maps GPS question

Please Login to Remove!

So I finally tested out the GPS on BB maps and Google maps today. I'm not sure if I'm missing something or if this is the way these are supposed to work, but when I'm driving from point A to point B my little icon on the map moves off the screen while driving. Isn't it supposed to work like a real GPS and stay on the screen and the map move?? Seems kind of pointless to have to hold my BB in my hand and keep moving up or down to follow my icon.

Thanks!

As far as I know, neither one is really meant (yet?) to be used while driving

The very fact that neither offers voice is on it's own a no-go for driving.

Wirelessly posted (8820)

Are both BB Maps and the google app doing this?

The map should refresh as you move, just as you are thinking. You could try a battery pull and see what happens.

For what it worth, google maps, an earlier version a long time ago did this to me. I scrolled the map for a few minutes and then it suddenly corrected on its own. I've never seen that again since. (But I haven't used google in a long time.)

Yes it should refresh and stay in middle. Personally, the most recent Google maps has locked up on some users so there is sometimes a lag.

With BB Maps, it will stay centered as long as you activate the GPS tracking

in google maps, if you scroll away from center, the screen will remain in that position. if you hit the number "0" it will center the map on your location and keep your location centered in the screen even if moving. so if you ever scroll away, just hit "0" to return to your current location and the map will follow you. on BB maps, hit the "back" button to do the same

Hitting the 0 button worked. I scrolled down the page and then couldn't get back and hitting the 0 helped. Thanks!

Any thoughts on which maps are better, Google or BB Maps? It just seems that Google maps on the iphone works and looks so much better then on the BB.

Great tips, thanks for that.

I think BB maps download faster, but G maps are better for guidance.

yeah BBmaps loads the map tiles very fast, and has a few other cool features such as, "track up" and if you hover over a street it will tell you the name of it. i just wish it would automatically access the GPS when you start the app instead of having to tell it to

I think the only version of Google Maps that is coded for driving is the version written for the DROID phone. The GM versions written for the BB are for reference only I would think. I know Garmin has an app for the BB which is meant to be a full blown GPS tracking application called Garmin Mobile but it's about $99 w/o a GPS puck. Haven't had much experience with BB Maps as I find it a bit clunky (I'm using v.4.5). In time, I'm sure there will be more options as dedicated GPS units may become a thing of the past.
