Default BES for Domino, look to a server that is not home mail server

Please Login to Remove!

Is there a way that BES can be configured to look at a server that is not a users home mail sever?

This would allow a BES and Domino server to be in one location and the users mail server to be in another and replication could be used to get mail to the 'local to BES' Domino server.

Can it be done?

Your BES does not need to be sitting right next to your mail server.
And it only needs to read the beginning of large e-mails (until you scroll to the last line, and view or download attachments), so it does not really need or eat a lot of bandwidth.

By contrast, setting up replication for a bunch of mailboxes is a heavy process, and you'll end up transferring much more data than necessary.

I agree 100% with Nico57. For all benefits, BES only brings to device the first 2K header of a message. Replicating mail files "local to BES" will be an effort gone wasted because BES honours the home server settings in the user's Person doc in the Domino Directory.

Lake_Puma is an interesting one but you should leave the server to service their respective functions in their own box.

i.e

BES Server - let it be BES in its own box
Mail Servers - let them do what they are supposed to do in their own boxes

This is call distribution of load. You are going to kill BES by loading it with the mail function.

Hope I help

Thank you for the replies but what if the link between the site of the BES and the Domino Mail servers is slow so does not meet RIM's 35ms latency requirements
