Not sure if this has been mentioned in the past, but you can indeed change or hide the icons.

Scroll to the application you want to move/hide, hold down the up/down arrow key and press the click-wheel. From there you can select to hide or move it.

Also, holding down the up/down arrow button while scrolling moves the focus vertically (think this was mentioned in another post).
