Default Another 8820 wifi problem

Please Login to Remove!

My 8820 sees (finds) my home network in the available wifi networks screen...I have wifi activated on the BB...security type on the BB indicates wep (not sure if thats correct or not) but after inputing the key #'s it says "unknown network failure"...I have read all the info I could, chatted with AT&T help desk and can't figure out what to do next.. I use a 2wire home portal if that helps in any way..

i had same exact problem. with a much smarter friend's help, i learned the solution in my case was to upgrade firmware for my linksys wifi router. now my wi-fi shows a nice functional blue on 8820. good luck

that might have worked for you but not for me, so theres a bigger issue at hand. i have a link WRT54GX4 and i updated the firmware just now and it still gave me the same error. i tried it without WEP and i also even tried adding the blackberry mac id for open access and it still fails. there must be a standard for the blackberry 8820. my wife has the iphone and it connects just fine. im sure im not the only one with this issue...

I have the linksys router too, and no problem with the two BB8820 that I have,
you have to put the router password and all will work good blue color WI FI oh forget it.
you have to put the priority on the browser to WI FI because without it you WIFI stay gray.

Default wifi still not working

I have the "out of box" software...ver 4.2.2.169, tried to download a newer version yesterday but it screwed up my pc (running Vista Home Premium)....so didn't load it...seems as a newbie, I can't download any apps to my pc because I can't find the app after it's downloaded to my PC thru BB desktop manager...so much for that...My wifi is still showing network failure so I e-mailed the wifi support...its a 2wire home portal supplied by ATT (actually Cingular)..they wrote me this morning and asked for more info on my problem...I'll post their reply when I get it...

Ok, I can't tell you how frustrating this is not being able to connect to my home wifi..I have spoken/e-mailed just about everyone from ATT, to Bellsouth DSL Support, to 2Wire, the maker of my home router...Here is the 2nd reply to my request for help:
Subject
WIFI problem using Blackberry 8820

Response (Charles H.) 09/24/2007 06:44 PM
Dear Charles,
Thank you for contacting 2Wire Customer Support. The following is intended to answer your inquiry:

Try changing the wep key
In order to change the wireless encryption key for your home portal use the following steps:
- Type gateway.2wire.net into your browser
- Click the Home Network icon at the top of the page
- Click the Wireless Settings link
- Submit your system password when prompted
- Check the Custom Encryption Key box
- Type a new key
- Apply the setting
- You will need to update this setting on computers that connect wirelessly to your home portal

This is something I'm personally not comfortable doing as I don't want to screw up my home network for my notebooks..I'm not very technical..HOWEVER....I did go to my local ATT store last night and this kid, salesman, was very knowledgeable about BB...He downloaded some chat programs for me that I was not able to do myself...and he tried to walk me through the wifi setup via PTT.......It didn't work but he got me to a web site for 2Wire that I didn't know existed...gateway.2wire.net (shown above) ...It showed my network and gave me options to change passwords/keys,showed all connections, speed, etc...I changed my password, entered it into the WEP KEY space on the BB and it didn't work.....Finally he told me that not all routers work with BB...That my 2wire (supplied from Bellsouth 5 years ago) may be outdated...and to order another one which I will do today..He didn't think ATT uses 2 Wire anymore..So, the hunt continues and I will post again when I get the new router.

Which router would work best with the bb I wonder. I would really rather keep my 2wire. I wonder what would cause the incompatibilty between the two. haven't had any problems with any other wireless devices.

Default New Router

Finally gave up and ordered a new router from ATT...Will be here tomorrow...It's a Westell, or something like that...They don't make the 2wire for ATT any longer....The tech rep said this new router would be compatible with the BB...but then again, everyone that I've spoken with has said the 2 wire should work...will advise when I get it and set it up....Here's hoping!!

Default 8820 Wifi Issues

I recently purchased the 8820. I connected the Wifi the first try with an open Netgear router that had old firmware. The issue I am having is the Wifi connection toggles in and out. After being on the phone with AT&T for about an hour and then BB for 4 hours over two days, they determined that the device was faulty. I returned it and receive a new one but it has the same issues. They had me update the firmware on my router and the 8820. I sent them diagnostics and it still is occuring. The one thing that stops it is removing the battery (reset). I turned on the advanced diagnostics and the Wifi portion actually never fails, but the Blackberry Infrastructure does. It causes the Wifi to fail and turn grey. I also added WPA security to the router and the problem stll exist. I seen the same issue on a different wifi connection as well. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

interesting, and sorry you're going through this. i upgraded firmware on a fairly new linksys g and for good measure upgraded to newest linksys n. things are better now but i too every once in a while experience the blue wi-fi toggling to gray for a while for no apparent reason. once on a call with bb, the person said try removing then replacing battery, and that seems to fix. i've separately whined in a few posts about my 8820 testing at only 75-85k (on TOAST.net Internet Service, the only speed test that seems to work with my 8820), while a couple of wi-fi laptops test at over 5+Mbps on same wi-fi networks (home linksys and also visitor lan at my company). maybe 8820 is not supposed to accept 5+Mbps of data, but it seems weird that when i test instead on EDGE, i get the asme 75-85k.

ok, off soap box for tonight. i'm beginning to think my vendor (at&t) may need to do some kind of OS update. (have already confirmed with my company's techs that my 8820 has newest, latest greatest shown at top of 8800 thread here). thx and i look forward to learning if there are more developments on your issue later

Clubowner,

Could you let me know the specific model number from the bottom of your Westell 327W modem? I've tried to get help from both AT&T and 2WIRE. 2WIRE says the 1000SW modem should work just fine. AT&T doesn't even want to talk to me about it, saying they are not obligated to assist with connecting anything other than the primary home computer. They are "willing" to sell me a new 2WIRE modem (model 2701HG-B) for $80 plus shipping, but they won't guarantee that will resolve the problem either.

Since you were successful in getting WiFi to work using the Westell 327W, I figure I'll go the same route, but I know this modem comes in different flavors for different ISP providers and I want to make sure I get the correct version. If you could provide me with your specific model number from the label on the bottom of the modem, I'd sincerely appreciate it. Thanks.

Hello guys,

Before anyone buying a new router please try this out. It worked for me just fine after messing for hours with the phone and router settings. I was close to hammer down my BB.

Assign a fix internal IP address (under DHCP settings) for your BB 8820 MAC address. You can get your BB MAC address under setting/options/status.

Under your router settings assign a fix IP for your BB's Mac addres like 192.168.0.199 or 192.168.1.199 depends on what Lan subnet your router is set. Make sure that the choosen address is in the defined address range.

Bytheway the phone will connect to WIFI without problem when SIM card is removed. Good Luck!

With my problem I was able to associate to my WiFi router (Netgear WGR614 v7), obtain an IP Address, gateway, DNS servers, etc., but I was unable to ping the gateway, or even the BB.

I was getting a 192.168.1.2 address assigned from the router. After hours of searching the internet forums only finding similar, not the same problems, I starting changing any setting I thought would make a difference. Then reset the router to factory defaults. Finally I was going to change the IP Scope from 192.168.1.x to 10.x.x.x. That failed so I instead changed the DHCP range from 192.168.1.2 - 192.168.1.51 to 192.168.1.5 - 192.168.1.100. After this change I my BB obtained an address of 192.168.1.6 and started to work. I was able to ping the router and even get DNS resolution. Don't know why but simply changing the IP address from 192.168.1.2 to .6 fix the issue.

But I was still unable to connect to the UMA service. This is an issue with my ISP's DNS system not resolving T-Mobile's servers. I found the fix at: HowardForums: Your Mobile Phone Community & Resource - !!! T-Mobile HotSpot@Home UMA Outage Solution !!!! . They suggested using OpenDNS.com. Made the change in my router, and the UMA service worked like a charm.

I hope this helps you.
