There is no 9600. There was 9630 and now there is a 9650.

Which device are you interested in. The 9630/50 are CDMA devices, with GSM. The 970 is 3G GSM only device.

For your needs of GSM, its the 9700. On a more trvial note for you, the 9650 has double the memory of the 9700 by having 512 MB to 256 MB.

And only devices with 512 MB can take OS 6.

Not true, the 9700, and Pearl 3G are getting OS 6, which only have 256MB.
Though non of the other 256MB devices appear to be getting it.

Oh sorry about that. For some reason I assumed OS6 just required more RAM, but you say RIM simply selected which devices, even with only 256MB RAM, would receive OS6. Now I am even more frstrated and pissed off.

Really disappointed that the 9630 is not going to be supported.

Been looking around is there a spec difference between the 9700 and 9630. Did a compare from the blackberry website and there look to be no hardware differences. I get wanting to sunset the device but come on.

9630 = cdma, no wi-fi
9700 = gsm, wi-fi

9630 replaced by 9650, so they feel or assume people have already / will be upgrading to the 9650 or a newer model at some point.
